Gravity (2013) Directed by Alfonso Cuarón

Somehow I don't think anybody ever had this type of movie in mind when the 'space thriller' genre was invented. It's a refreshingly original and also very creative movie, that for most part is being a great one as well.

From a technical viewpoint, this probably is the best movie of the year. I'm not just talking about the visuals and special effects but also the way this movie was shot. The movie feels like all of it is one big long shot, which of course isn't true but the movie successfully creates the illusion. A real accomplishment, also especially when considering how this movie constantly combines green screen effects with real actors and some more practical effects. I wouldn't be surprised if the planning and preparing for this movie took way, way longer than the actual filming and post-production of it.

But most of the people probably aren't going to notice this because of the simple fact that they will be too engrossed into the movie. It's a gripping tale of survival, that combines classic genre elements such as desolation, claustrophobia and danger and suspense, only all placed at some very original settings. With its themes you can still compare this movie to a lot of other genre movies but fact still remains that this at all times remains a very original movie, all throughout, even though some of the story developments all feel a bit too familiar and predictable, in my opinion.

With its themes, settings and storytelling, this movie reminded me the most of "Life of Pi". And just like "Life of Pi", you can also choose to read as much into this movie if you want to, or simply take it as a straightforward survival tale, like I did. But I can understand why some people would still be able to take far more out of this movie as well. It's filled with some, mostly subtle, symbolism, that also implies that the movie is trying to say more with its story at times. But really, don't be scared off by any of this, since like I said, you can still simply take this movie as a straightforward survival story as well and 'enjoy' the experience just as much!

It does a good job with handling all of the tension and create a good atmosphere for this movie. This of course is mostly due to its nightmarish sounding concept of being adrift in space. Truly stuff that will give some people nightmares and besides, the movie constantly comes up with some new and creative things to keep things going and interesting. There is never a boring moment in this movie and it constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat, also since you know that there absolutely is no guarantee that things are ever going to end well for its characters and actually all odds are against them.

An original but above all things also very effective, technically well made movie, that is definitely worth seeing!

The Heat (2013) Directed by Paul Feig

Well, the movie as it is isn't a terribly bad buddy cop flick but I still had plenty of problems with it.

Of course the movie is trying to be original by instead of featuring two male leads, feature two female cops as the movie its lead characters. The only problem though is that some of the genre specific comedy just works out better with male main characters involved.

Here's the problem with crude female comedy; When guys get rude with a person, in lets say another average buddy cop flick, they do it with a reason. They try to get information for instance or are simply joking around and messing with each other, in a brotherly type of way. When female characters get rude they do it because they genuinely don't like a person. Or at least that's always the way it feels like. The two main leads, played by Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, are basically rude to every person, for absolutely no good reason and really mess with some 'innocent' people, all in the name of comedy. No wonder most people don't like cops. It are movies like this that give them a really bad name! So, every time Melissa McCarthy starts yelling at someone or cusses someone out or throws a phone book at some person, it feels like she is doing it because she is genuinely angry and not because she is passionate about something or is simply trying to get the job done. It's hard to like characters like this really, when they are mostly rude and extremely arrogant ones and do some absolutely despicable things at times.

But oh well, at least the movie, surprisingly enough, doesn't ever get too annoying with its comedy and characters. And yes, there are some good laughs in this movie but I wouldn't exactly call this a laugh-riot. Most of the jokes are pretty formulaic but they are well executed nevertheless. It makes this a watchable enough comedy but just nothing I would ever recommend to anyone.

I also can't really tell you much about the story since this appears to be one of those type of movies in which its story comes secondary. The movie is all about setting up the next joke and crazy situation, rather than being busy trying to tell a coherent and engaging story. It feels a bit messy all, since the movie definitely loses its focus at times. In its core, the story also feels a bit too simplistic and formulaic, causing the movie to never rise above the level of average.

And really, Melissa McCarthy isn't a bad actress and she's genuinely one of the most talented female comedy actors out there but I wish she would start playing different roles. She's playing the same type of rude and loud, obnoxious characters in every movie, which isn't a weird or uncommon thing for comedians to do but in her case it's starting to become a bit tiresome and she's most likely also perfectly capable of doing different and far better things.

It's not as bas as you probably fear it is and maybe it's actually even the best buddy cop flick in recent years but that still doesn't make this a standout- or hilarious type of, perfect, comedy.

A Time to Kill (1996) Directed by Joel Schumacher

(Review originally written at 3 November 2008)

I never have been a too big fan of movies based on John Grisham novels, since they are quite boring within its genre but I've always liked this movie, though in all honesty the movie really starts loosing some of its power on repeated viewing.

The movie has a real inspiring and powerful story. focusing on moral dilemmas, racial issues and the legal system, when a black man shoots and kills two racist white men who had just raped and attempted to kills his 10-year old daughter. It makes this also a real original movie to watch within its genre; the courtroom-drama. The movie mixes its 3 main themes; racial issues, moral dilemmas and the legal system, really well and effectively. It might sound like a messy movie and as a movie that is trying to preach but it in fact is a really well constructed and balanced movie, that is skillfully being directed by Joel Schumacher, as weird as that might sound, considering that he mostly makes some really below par movies. Even his best movies are mostly lacking in more than one way. This movie can perhaps be regarded as his least lacking and simply best movie. Fair is fair, he simply did a good job with this movie.

When I first saw this movie it made quite an impression on me, due to its great story about justice. The movie angered me, the movie moved me and it simply grabbed me all throughout. The movie makes its point and is showing the less pretty side of the legal system and the treatment of Afro-American people within it and the treatment of those people in the south of America in general.

Samuel L. Jackon has picked several roles like this throughout his career; a black man against society and the system. He seems like a person to me who is always making a big point out of racial issues and the treatment and acceptance of Afro-Americans in America in particular. In all honesty, it often more annoys me than that I find it something admirable and it just doesn't always work out that well and effectively within a movie. This particular movie forms an exception to this though and like I said before it's a movie that makes its point well, by often exaggerating and generalizing things of course but it nevertheless comes across well and powerful.

Yes, some things come across as being quite over-the-top and not exactly as anything too believable and I do feel that the movie is overdoing it a bit at times but the movie is just never going too far with it and it knows to maintain a good balance between the strong realistic aspects and the more 'Hollywood' like aspects and themes of the movie.

You also really have to give movie credit for its cast. You have to remember that this movie got made back in 1996, when very few people had an idea who actors such as Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Spacey, Chris Cooper and Kiefer Sutherland all were. Besides that, the movie also features some already well established names such as Samuel L. Jackson, Oliver Platt, Donald Sutherland and Patrick McGoohan in one of his last big movie roles. I say last, not because he's death, he's very much alive still but he rarely stars in any movies, pretty much like he has done throughout his entire career. Seems like he is just more an actor who enjoys working on the stage.

Simply a great and effective movie within its genre, although it's already starting to loose some of its power, 12 years later. So it will most likely not become a classic in 30 years from now.
