Excuse Me for Living (2012) Directed by Ric Klass

There are very few things that are worse or more annoying than watching a completely pointless movie, that means well but ultimately is about- and adds absolutely nothing.

No need to be mild about this movie; I absolutely hated it. Throughout, I constantly kept wondering what the point of it all was and what the movie was trying to do and say with its story. Sad thing about it is that it truly seems to believe it's being a cute and heartfelt movie, about social issues with some realistic touches to it.

Just like its story, its approach is all over the place. At parts its a silly comedy, at others a more serious one and at others its being more of a straight and serious drama or romantic movie. But really nothing in it ever clicks. There is never a right balance, making this movie ultimately ineffective as a comedy, drama and romance and just as a movie as a whole.

It's a real big problem for the movie that the story seems to be going absolutely nowhere. It's its own fault really. It tries to throw in far too many distractions, that in the long run add absolutely nothing to the story. Guess the movie tried hard to connect everything, by showing how the different characters influenced each other and helped to change their lives but the different story lines and characters just never feel well enough connected at all for it to ever work out as something convincing or effective. Instead it's one big, uninteresting, mess, that's not even being remotely entertaining or funny with any of its comedy either.

You would think that a movie which stars Robert Vaughn, Christopher Lloyd, Wayne Knight and Jerry Stiller in it at least would feature some mildly amusing comedy but it's all pretty embarrassing to watch really. They get absolutely nothing good or funny to do in this movie and at times you could see them struggle with some of its poor material and badly written dialog. Really painful and embarrassing to watch really and I also just can't understand why any of them ever agreed to appear in this movie. It's not like they received an handsome paycheck for it either, seeing how low-budget this movie is.

Another thing that's bad about the movie is that it doesn't even feature a good enough main character in it. Tom Pelphrey just totally isn't likable in this and comes across as a crazy (yes, crazy! Not depressed, as they try to convince you of), spoiled little brat, that whines and complains about absolutely nothing relevant or interesting for this movie. Something that's annoying about all of the characters in this movie is that by the end of it they don't really seem redeemed, or come across like they have progressed as human beings. By the end of it, the movie does indeed wrap all of their story arcs up but it's all extremely forced and some stuff just comes out of absolutely nowhere. Not satisfying at all.

It's a good example of some poor film-making. That's probably the most kind and positive thing I could say about it.

Dead Before Dawn 3D (2012) Directed by April Mullen

A friendly warning before starting things off; be aware of the fact that this really isn't being a serious zombie/demon movie but more one that is directed toward young teenagers. It does not only have the visual look of a kids movie but it's also being a childish one with comedy, characters, dialog and all of its situations.

It's a very infantile movie, in which there is never a sense of any danger or tension, also since its main characters are extremely busy with a whole bunch of stuff, such as getting the boy/girl and not necessarily with trying to survive or lifting the curse, even while clearly their lives are in danger and they have already lost some loved ones.

The good news is though that it's not being an horrible movie to watch. The movie does very little with its story, so it's also can't do an awful lot wrong. You could say that its simplicity saved this movie and still makes this a somewhat enjoyable flick, if you're in the mood for it.

It's definitely being a weird thing that this movie looks and feels like a children's movie, considering its premise and also its blood and gore. But this in every way looks and feels like a Nickelodeon movie, directed toward young teenagers. And it's not done in a satirically kind of way! It's just the movie its style, which for sure shall throw off a bunch of people already.

There is nothing wrong with a movie taking a more simplistic and comedy approach to things, after all, basically 90% of all zombie flicks are being extremely simplistic and straightforward ones but this movie just never gets clever or truly creative with anything, which causes most of its humor and situations to fall flat. Well, perhaps the movie is being creative at times, however mostly in a silly and just not all too effective way.

This movie is just being too simplistic and infantile to consider this a truly good or enjoyable genre flick but thrust me, there are far more worse genre movies to watch out there!

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) Directed by Leonard Nimoy

While watching all of these Star Trek movies I realize all the more how it really isn't my kind of thing. There are far too many slow moments and not enough action or adventure and all of the characters are too well mannered/friendly and lack good personalities or a decent enough background story. Not that I hate watching the movies but it aren't being ones that I'm likely to ever revisit. This movie however might be an exception of this. It's surprisingly good and perfectly watchable and I'm not ashamed to say that I liked this movie better than either one of its two predecessors; "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan" and "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"

The foremost reason why this movie never was liked and received that well is because it focuses on brining Spock back to life, while many thought that the movie by doing this sort of betrayed what the much liked and appreciated "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan" all did previously and this movie was just being a cheap way to continue the series, with Spock as a character and Leonard Nimoy as an actor involved again. But seriously I don't mind this at all. Spock always had been a far better and more fascinating character than Kirk for instance and the dynamic between him and the Kirk character always had been something the series relied and thrived on, so I'm glad they decided to bring him back.

Besides, it also works out well, within the realms of this movie and its story. It actually has a pretty decent story in it, with more adventure and excitement than any of two previous Star Trek movies, in my opinion. Perhaps the movie feels more fun and adventurous because it isn't constantly just set aboard the Enterprise and it's a traveling movie, in which the characters are constantly movie forward, toward its goal. It also causes the movie to not really feature any distracting slower moments in it.

It's not like everything works out well though. It still has some needless distractions in it, such as a bunch of plot lines and characters that easily could had been left out, or they should had developed them better, to make them more interesting. The whole Klingon thing for example. It would had been interesting for the movie to make Kruge (played by an unrecognizable Christopher Lloyd) and his gang the big evil villains of the movie but they hardly have an impact on the story and are just thrown in for the movie to have a couple of fight scenes. Things like this all prevent this movie from being a truly great movie but it still doesn't prevent it from being a pretty good and entertaining movie!

An underrated and under-appreciated Star Trek movie, in my opinion.

Piranha 3DD (2012) Directed by John Gulager

At least he creators of the first movie knew what they were doing. The makers of this film absolutely had no idea how to turn this into a good and fun genre movie to watch.

It should tell you enough already that main cast and crew members of the first movie are no part of this film. I like to believe that they were smart enough to stay away as far as possible from this obvious inferior sequel.

From a sequel to a movie like "Piranha", you would expect them to go even more overboard with things, this time around. But instead of more gore, more nudity and more fun, there is less of everything. Especially the fact that there isn't really any good gore present is very disappointing. And the gore that is present in the movie is just far too fake looking for my liking. It prefers to use computer effects over practical effects, which was a really poor pick, in my opinion.

But what makes the movie just bad to watch is the fact that the story is all over the place. It doesn't really follow a good a clear main plot line and none of the characters is fun or even likable enough to care for.

This movie really has some bad and lazy writing in it. This shouldn't always be a problem for a movie of this sort though. I mean, the first "Piranha" movie sure had lots of big plot holes in it as well but the fun of the whole movie compensated a lot. It actually was a part of what made the movie so fun to watch. It made it a spoof of the genre, by making fun of all the clichés and weaknesses, including lots of nonsensical stuff and big plot holes. So really, deliberate bad written can be fun but I feel that in this case it wasn't deliberate at all. It's just incompetence and that's also what makes it bad and annoying to follow all.

When the end comes, you suddenly also start to realize that everything that happened before really didn't mattered and totally wasn't being relevant for the movie at all. You could say that the movie only builds up to its last 30 minutes or so, which isn't even being a good movie finale. It was supposed to be one big bloodbath and orgy or gore but let me tell you that compared to the first movie, this one felt like a kids film.

Really, it all could had been saved with some good humor but that is also incredibly lacking in this movie as well. They had no idea how to make things fun and even when the movie is going over-the-top, it just isn't being all that funny to watch.

It's just incredibly bad all and not in a good or fun way at all. Skip it please! Or else they might make another one...

Piranha (2010) Directed by Alexandre Aja

Of course the key to liking this movie, is to take it not too seriously. It's also so over-the-top and ridicules that I just can't imaging anyone taking this serious in the first place, though there are still plenty of people like that out there, as it appears.

It's a B-movie that is very well aware of itself and actually strives to be taken as a B-movie. Now, this is an approach that can work out but more often does not, since it's too forced and the movies are too slick looking to be taken as a B-movie. However in this case I feel like it did work out well!

Throughout the years, I have seen plenty of just plain silly mankind versus nature/animal type of movies. And as far as this sub-genre goes; this is probably one of the better movies out there, that I have seen. It's such an enjoyable film to watch that its story just simply doesn't matter and neither does all of the crazy and just stupid stuff that this movie comes up with.

But it's not like that the movie simply only goes over-the-top with its story. It also does so with some of its characters but mostly with its gore. It's an extremely gory film, that also has lots of nudity in it as well. The gore gets so extreme at points that the movie actually starts to turn into a comedy, which is one of the reasons why it also becomes such an enjoyable movie to watch.

It's also such a clichéd movie but because of this, the movie actually starts to turn into a spoof. The movie gets deliberately exaggerated in about every way imaginable, such as with its gore, nudity, character behavior and plot developments. When you get and recognize all of this, the movie actually becomes a much more fun movie for you to watch!

Of course when you start over-analyzing everything and look seriously at this movie, there is no way you could call this movie a great one. But not all movies are made to be great. Sometimes certain movies are just simply made for entertainment and not to win any awards or receive lots of critical praise. This movie is a perfect example of that. It's purely made for entertainment and it looks to me like the film-makers also had plenty of fun creating it.

It also must be the reason why so many big name actors make a cameo appearance in this movie. Lots of people wanted to be part of the fun and madness that got called "Piranha". Richard Dreyfuss, Christopher Lloyd and Eli Roth make cameo appearances, while also big name actors such as Ving Rhames and Dina Meyer play bit parts.

It's just simple, silly, fun entertainment, that works out very well!

Quicksilver Highway (1997) (TV) Directed by Mick Garris

(Review originally written at 15 August 2009)

This is one of those "Twilight Zone: The Movie" kind of movie, that features a couple of different horror stories and a storyteller (played by Christopher Lloyd) who binds all of the stories together. It's not an horrible movie but it also certainly ain't among the most interesting ones that the genre has to offer.

For an horror movie it's certainly lacking in originality and good scares. It's a rather clichéd movie that is predictable to watch, though it does offer enough entertainment to still consider this movie watchable. Still the movie is too slow and too little good and interesting is ever happening, making this movie at the same time not that great to watch for the lovers of the genre.

It's still a rather good looking movie, at least for a made for TV movie it is. It's a movie made with some skilled people involved. Director Mick Garris already had some experience in the genre prior this movie and directed a couple of horror movies and TV-series episodes. None of them were anything too outstanding but it gained him obviously the right knowledge needed. Seems like he also loves to work with some Stephen King material. This movie also features a short story which got based on the Stephen King short story "Chattery Teeth".

The movie at times is still a bit of a clumsy one, which makes the movie look bad and ridicules at times, this is especially the case with the movie its last story. Not all of its writing and dialog is always convincing. Also some of the actors are pretty poor ones and even Christopher Lloyd is overacting way too much to enjoy him in his role.

All in all it isn't a too recommendable movie but it still has a certain entertainment level.

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984) Directed by W.D. Richter

(Review originally written at 24 July 2007)

Not too sure what to think about this movie. It seems like its a spoof, of what, I do not know however. Perhaps of comic-book type of movies from the '80's, or adventurous serials from the '30's/40's? But then again there's the problem that the movie is not really funny and on top of that, also not so very well made. Guess the movie can best be seen as a cult-classic, for the fans of it.

To be honest, the movie began well and promising. It developed some potentially interesting characters and plot lines but for some reason as the movie progresses they don't get handled well. The movie becomes more crazy and crazy as the movie heads toward the ending. At one point I even stopped caring and wanting to understand what the movie was all about. It was confusing, it was poor but above all it was odd.

The movie could had been fun, the movie could had been action filled but yet it all isn't. It's wasted potential, cause I guess that in essence Buckaroo Banzai isn't really a bad fun movie main-hero.

The movie is only fun now really with its character's names. All of the alien's their first name is John and they have names such as John Bigboote, John O'Connor and John Smallberries. But other than that, there isn't really much fun present in the movie. The many famous actors however still provide the movie with some fun and this uplifts the movie. Amazing how many great actors are in this movie such as Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, Christopher Lloyd, Clancy Brown, Ronald Lacey, Vincent Schiavelli and Dan Hedaya. John Lithgow is deliciously overacting as the movie its main villain but I just wish that he had more sequences and was made more interesting as a character. Peter Weller was a great leading man in the '80's and he shows with this movie how well he can carry a movie.

The special effects are all decent for '80's standards but perhaps overused a bit too much. The musical score is typically '80's like and absolutely horrible. Further more the movie is fairly well looking, too bad inexperienced director W.D. Richter doesn't know how to use everything to its full potential.

Yet it's not all that bad and the movie still entertains, so the movie obviously still has some redeeming qualities which makes this still a bit of a watchable movie.

Back to the Future Part III (1990) Directed by Robert Zemeckis

(Review originally written at 31 December 2006)

I'll admit that probably the reason why I find this movie to be the lesser one of the three Back to the Future movies, has all to do with the reason that Western has never really been my favorite movie genre. This movie is almost set entirely in the Wild West of the late 19th century.

The movie features all of the Western clichés but at the same time it doesn't ridicule the genre. Pistol fights at dawn, hanging, robbing the stagecoach, typical villains, a sheriff, you name it and its in this movie. You may say that Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale pay a great homage to the longtime gone genre of classic spaghetti Westerns, with using all of the typical clichés and small references.

"Back to the Future" and "Back to the Future Part II" were two brilliantly written movies, with ingenious connected plot lines, moments and characters. "Back to the Future Part III" is also well written and is definitely fun and entertaining but just not as clever or ingenious as the previous two movies. "Back to the Future Part III" surely does still offer plenty of enough entertainment and cleverness. It makes sure that the movie overall is an entertaining one, that is also definitely helped by its characters and good, quick, fun directing from Robert Zemeckis, who with the Back to the Future movies made himself immortal as a movie director.

Besides the Wild West concept the movie also differs from the other previous two Back to the Future movies in many more ways. Of course the Wild West already provides the movie with a totally different atmosphere and premise than the previous two Back to the Future movies but also the storytelling and approach makes this movie a 'different' one. You can really say that perhaps this time the real main character of the movie is the Doc. The main plot line (a love story) of the movie involves him. Not much room for Marty and his family this time in this one, unlike had been the case in the previous two movies. I liked the previous two movies so much because Marty clashed in his past and future with his own relatives, that were alive at that time period. It always resulted in some comical- and brilliant written and constructed moments. "Back to the Future Part III" doesn't really have enough moments of that. It still has some fun moments involving time traveling and of course mainly the cultural differences that show what happens if characters from this time period are being set back in the early 19th century. It makes some of the moments in the movie still hilarious, such as Marty's clothes, his choice to name himself Clint Eastwood, Frisbees and the opening ceremony of the well known clock from the Back to the Future movies.

The movie of course also future 'distant' relatives of characters that are alive in 1985, the real-time, time period of the entire trilogy. Some play a more prominent role than others. Again the main villain is a Tannen. Buford 'Mad Dog' Tannen, to be exact. A typical stereotype example of a dumb but ruthless Western villain. He is perfectly portrayed by Thomas F. Wilson. The entire cast is basically great. Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd have really grown into their roles and the chemistry is still there. They are being helped this time by the great Mary Steenburgen, as Doc's love interest.

What I love about the Back to the Future movies is that they always pick things up were the last movie ended. It makes the movie really a trilogy that can also be perfectly watched as one movie, just as the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars movies.

The movie is really great looking with great sets, costumes and make-up effects that suit the time period of the movie just right. What the movie also does well is blending in the different atmospheres of the different time periods with each others. When the movie is set back in 1985, you don't have the feeling like you're watching a totally different movie. Dean Cundey's cinematography of the movie is great and he also plays a small cameo role in the movie itself by the way. Alan Silvestri's musical score is also great but again also the lesser of the three in my opinion. But it's still great, so what am I really complaining about...The early special effects are also quite good, considering its period this movie was made.

The movie is really great, fun, clean, adventurous entertainment to watch from start till finish, with fun characters, settings and directing. A fitting conclusion of perhaps the most entertaining movie trilogy of all time.
