Frequency (2000) Directed by Gregory Hoblit

It pays off to be original. "Frequency" is an unique movie in its sort, with an original concept that allows the movie to work out as a very effective one.

It's probably best to watch this movie without knowing anything about its plot. Just let it surprise you as it moves along, which also was the way how I first watched this movie, a long time ago. It's a movie that uses different genre styles. It's a thriller, it's a drama, it's a crime movie and it has a bit of science-fiction in it as well. This movie doesn't want to be put into one category. It probably made this movie a bit of a hard sell at the time of its release, which also would explain why it isn't known any better and more loved.

All the different genre styles work out very well together. It manages to find a good and effective balance between all of its many different ingredients, without ever going overboard with anything. It would have been so easy for this movie to get totally ridicules or sentimental with some of plot lines and developments. But I feel that the movie at all times remains a very honest and straightforward one, without too many needless distractions to the main plot. And even when the movie gets somewhat ridicules and melodramatic, it still works out way better than would be the case for any other type of movie. It's probably all because this movie is a very engaging and surprising one. It's original approach and concept ensures that the movie has plenty of surprises and good developments in it, that keeps you glued to the screen.

It isn't too hard to get into this movie, even when you normally don't like movies with far fetched and unrealistic concepts. It's because it's a very human movie to watch. It's all about its characters really and not necessarily as much about its actual plot. When you don't feel engaged with the movie its plot, you're surely still able to feel for the movie its characters, since they are all some very likable and realistic ones. The movie has some good dynamics between its different characters in it, which I feel, is also truly the core of this movie.

It's from the time that Gregory Hoblit was truly on a roll as a director. All of his movies were great and special ones, that used an unique approach and concept. It's a shame he never gained more notoriety and his best known movies are actually also really his lesser ones as well. Stick to the early movies out of his career, such as this one, if you want to see some nice surprises.

I feel that I have already said too much about this movie. Just watch it and let it surprise you!

An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000) (V) Directed by Douglas McCarthy

Well, I have to say that surprisingly enough I enjoyed this movie better than the first Goofy movie; " A Goofy Movie". Perhaps it's true that this movie is being even more simplistic and formulaic but at the same time it's also more enjoyable!

Sure, this movie is basically nothing more but just an extended "Goof Troop" episode but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It means it features the same sort of comedy and story developments, without being ever too much in your face with any of its message or other annoying aspects. There are of course still messages to be found throughout basically this entire movie, as is the case with ever feature length Disney production but it doesn't ever really distract and feels more part of the actual story, as for instance was the case with the previous Goofy movie.

You just have to take this movie for what it is and shouldn't mind the story too much. It's just about as formulaic and predictable as you can imagine but at least it plays out well and entertaining enough for the actual movie. It's probably also because Goofy himself plays a big part in this and the movie isn't just all about Max and his adventures at college. And after all, this is not the sort of movie you should pick to death anyway, simply because it's one that's made for children and only made to give them a good time. And at this, the movie does not fail. It's well paced, has fun characters and plenty of good comical situations.

The animations are all acceptable looking. Nothing too impressive but it's Disney, so it's definitely of decent quality all. The moments that the movie actually tries to impress with its visuals are the worst looking ones, so it's a good thing for this movie that it's mostly average looking.

Definitely a fun and good enough animated movie, based off on "Goof Troop".

High Fidelity (2000) Directed by Stephen Frears

There are of course plenty of movies about falling in loving but how many movies are there about breakups really? Not that many at all, making this movie already a pretty unique one in that regard, even while most love-stories and relationships don't end well in real life. It's a real process and personal journey before you really end up with the right person and find out what true love is. That's also why this isn't a sad movie at all. It's just a movie about life, in which it's main character is going through a real process.

Ant that's probably the movie its greatest strength; The greatest strength of the movie can be found in its realism. Surely everybody should be able to recognize certain emotions, events and connect with certain characters in this movie. It makes it a both involving and realistic movie, that never goes over-the-top with anything, unless it's for its comical relief.

It handles all of the small and big questions everybody struggles with at some point in life, especially after a breakup. The movie does also provides some answers but not in a pretentious kind of way, or like it's the definite truth. After all, every person is unique and handles things differently and what works for some might end up disastrously for others. Still I believe that everyone should be able to take something valuable and helpful out of this movie, on your journey for true love, happiness and making a relationship a successful one.

At least mostly for guys that is. After all, this movie gets told from the viewpoint of a male character, played by John Cusack, which in itself is also a pretty good and unique take on the story. After all, guys normally aren't really depicted as the emotional, unhappy and harmed ones, in romantic movies, which is of course absurd, since they can be just as much the victim of circumstances and hurt by certain events.

But really, I'm probably making this movie sound more heavy and serious than it in fact truly is. The tone of the movie is actually pretty light, thanks to its snappy dialog and its sort of comical approach. Not that this is a full blown comedy but it are little things like this that help to keep the movie light and easy to digest. You most likely won't feel depressed afterward, not even if you went to a nasty breakup yourself. It's also because this movie has plenty of hope in it and doesn't purely focus on just the negative aspects, or is ever truly that bitter about love.

The movie also truly gets uplifted by its performances. John Cusack was at the top of his game and everyone was pretty much perfectly cast in this movie, with actors such as Jack Black, Tim Robbins and Catherine Zeta-Jones also involved.

Since the movie doesn't just focus on its one main plot line, set in the present but also shows some different storyline's, which all happened in the past, the pace of the movie also works out quite pleasantly. It's a true snappy movie to watch, that never really slows down, which is probably also part of the reason why this never becomes a too sappy one. So some really great storytelling, from director Stephen Frears's part as well!

Simply a great movie to watch, that everybody, till some extend and in one way or another, should be able to identify themselves with.

Fa yeung nin wa (2000) Directed by Kar Wai Wong

Of course this is not a movie for just about everybody but those who are able to appreciate a more subtle, quiet and artistic made movie, with great visuals and a slowly told story, this is a great watch!

You could basically enjoy this movie for two different things; either its storytelling or its visual directing approach by Kar Wai Wong. Really, if you just don't care very much about its story, this movie might still be a very worthwhile experience, due to its great looking visuals and vice versa. Or you of course could enjoy the movie simply for both of these two reasons, which isn't unlikely you will!

It's an odd thing, people describing this movie as a romance. Not that they are wrong about it, after all the movie is shot and told as such a movie but the story in fact is actually being far from romantic. I would even call this movie a reverse love-story, in which the main characters are loosing love instead of finding it and fall out of love instead of in love. It doesn't make this movie any less powerful, involving and even uplifting to watch though. It's not a depressing movie by any means, despite of its themes and more slower type of storytelling.

So it's a slower, more subtle and often visual orientated movie. Normally this style of film-making would often come across as pretentious, also because it's all obviously done in a deliberate and perhaps somewhat forced way. I mean, it's nothing that the movie truly needed to have in it but still it manages to add so much to the movie. It really helps to let the story move along and to establishes the mood for its characters and all of the particular situations. Even when not much is being said, you still exactly know what is going on in the character's minds at the moment.

It's a 'different' movie but that doesn't mean it's being a hard, or odd one to watch. It's a perfectly accessible movie, mostly also due to its clear and straightforward storytelling, that might dwell but never strays off. It's truly a movie you need to experience for yourself and chances are you'll absolutely be grabbed by its storytelling and visual approach!

Iki-jigoku (2000) Directed by Shugo Fujii

So this movie loves to see itself as a blend of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and movies from the Hammer studios, which is an interesting approach to take for a Japanese genre movie but not really one that works out all too successful.

Thing about this movie is that it just isn't being much good as a horror. For most part of the movie, there is no good tension or mystery in it and when it does feature elements such as that, it doesn't quite work out that well, since the movie just isn't the best made or most convincing one. In the first half of the movie you'll basically have no idea what is going on and during the second half, when everything gets explained and revealed, you simply don't care enough anymore.

It's really a problem that the story just isn't being all that good. Besides, it's hard to follow and messy at times and the story doesn't always makes the best choices. Of course basically all Japanese horror movies have a certain 'weirdness' to them but this movie really pushes it at times and unfortunately goes a bit overboard with it as well at certain points, especially toward its ending, which also doesn't really rhymes with the movie its first half.

Another thing I also disliked about the movie was that it didn't really featured a good and likable enough main character in it. What, just because the main character is in a wheelchair we are supposed to sympathize for him? No, he just doesn't have enough character to him and it doesn't help that he's being mostly mute throughout the entire movie.

The movie is mostly being torture-porn and this is also where most of the movie its horror comes from. If you're looking for gore, this movie still has some moments in it but it isn't the best, since most of it is very random and doesn't really work out as anything shocking or graphic, also mainly because it isn't always being handled that well, or incorporated into the story convincingly. The movie is mostly taking a 'fun' and entertainment type of approach, as opposed to a serious and atmospheric horror kind of approach, which wasn't one of the best choices this movie made, since it pretty much ruins all of the horror aspects about it.

You could say that the movie perhaps tried a bit too hard. Director Shugo Fujii was only 26, at the time he did this movie, so perhaps he let his youthful enthusiasms take over, which blinded him and prevented him from making a truly good and successful genre movie. Or perhaps it was simply being a lack of experience thing. After all, it was only his first full length movie.

I just couldn't ever really like or get into this movie.

Kippur (2000) Directed by Amos Gitai

This is being a pretty good and different war movie but it does start loosing some of its power after a while, once the movie starts repeating itself, over and over again.

I always enjoy watching movies, concerning history, which I don't know all that much about already. This is a movie centered around the Yom Kippur War and tells the movie entirely from the perspective of a rescue crew. This means that the movie itself isn't focusing on the fighting but more on its aftermath. This is an interesting approach for a war movie to take and of course also works effective as an anti-war movie.

Well, mostly effective, since the movie does start to wear out after a while. It seems that there is only so much you could do with this concept, before you start repeating stuff. Half way through I was waiting for the movie to take a different turn or do something unexpected or original. It doesn't do any of this really, which did left me a bit disappointed, especially since I was quite liking the movie at first.

It still remains a very well made movie. Visually there is very little wrong with this movie and it gives a pretty realistic and detailed view of a battlefield. Even though you'll hardly see any fighting in this movie, it does indeed feels like a true war movie, that obviously cost some bit of money to make.

Also because of its subject and its approach, this still remains a good watch but it's just not as effective as it potential could and perhaps also should had been.

In the Light of the Moon (2000) Directed by Chuck Parello

(Review originally written at 24 June 2009)

Talking about wasting a potentially fine and interesting subject. Here we have a movie about Ed Gein, which is about the best and most interesting American horror-story, mainly because it of course all really happened. The movie however doesn't work out as good and effective because of the reason that the movie picks a wrong approach for its subject. The movie picks a more Hollywood horror approach, in which the killer and his action get depicted as sensational-horror. The movie tries hard to get personal at times and dig into the the mind of Gein but all is in vein really.

The movie still could had been a decent one of its horror, atmosphere and tension would had been better. The movie however more or less fails on each of these fronts, making "In the Light of the Moon" an ineffective movie within its genre. Perhaps if the movie would had been made 30 years earlier with a more '70's style over it the movie could had still worked out. Now you're instead better off watching the other Gein movie "Deranged", which is a surprising good movie about Gein, without using the real names of the persons.

It's a pretty distant movie that remains mostly on the surface. It shows too much of the things that aren't interesting and too little of the things that were potentially interesting. For instance the movie shows very little of Gein's grave-robbing and how he used to skin his victims and use body parts for decoration and suits out of real people's skin. The movie is more being a light-version of the Ed Gein story, as if this movie got aimed toward TV only.

It must had really been a dream-project for Steve Railsback, since he also produced. It was a kind of role that could had launched him to stardom and he also certainly ain't too bad in his role and he does look like Gein but due to the movie its execution his character also doesn't really work out effectively.

It's not an horrible movie but considering its subject it's still a disappointing one.

Nightfall (2000) (V) Directed by Gwyneth Gibby

(Review originally written at 30 May 2009)

Judging by looking at this movie, the film-makers must have thought they had gold. The original source material seemed good enough to create and interesting and deep thought provoking sci-fi movie with. I seemed however like they had no idea how to handle its concept properly. Instead they threw in some adventure and lame action to make the movie a good and interesting one but the end result is far from satisfying.

It's an obviously cheaply made movie, with low production values, which can be seen back in its small sets and the unimaginative look of the overall movie, which is especially disappointing for a movie of its sort. Yes you can call this a typical straight to DVD B-movie.

What makes the movie all the more worse are the acting performances. Some people should just never be allowed to work in the movie business. This movie does really have some untalented people uttering their lines in front of the camera in it. The movie still has David Carradine though, which always adds some pleasure to any movie.

The movie is just never any exciting or spectacular to watch. The movie could had raised some thought provoking elements and themes but at fails at every attempt to do so. The action and more adventurous elements of the movie are also far from good enough to still consider this movie a watchable one.

The story is being told too messy and without any imagination really. Seems like director Gwyneth Gibby has no passion for the genre really and also certainly no experience in it.

There really is no reason why you should ever watch this clumsy little movie.

Bounce (2000) Directed by Don Roos

(Review originally written at 13 April 2009)

It's easy to see that this movie is a failure but it's hard to point out what it is that makes this movie a bad one. The movie is just too sloppy and not involving enough to say anything useful about it.

The movie has a formulaic and predictable story but on top of that also picks a just totally bad approach of things. The story isn't really going anywhere and it basically picks all of the least interesting angels imaginable. The story never becomes emotional or in any way engaging. You won't care for any of the characters and you also overall just don't really care for anything else that's happening within this movie. A failure as a drama and as a romantic movie.

It's incredible how this movie is written. It's as if they were thinking lets make an original movie with unoriginal ingredients. This of course doesn't work and causes the movie its story to be such a distant- and far from interesting one. You can say that the movie its problems start with its main source material already.

I must say that Gwyneth Paltrow still gave her best efforts but it seems like a waste of energy to me. Most of the other actors don't seem at place within the genre. Its true that they aren't being helped though by the most realistic writing or best kind of dialog. Couldn't they just have said no this this movie?

Just not really a movie worth watching, although also being far from the worst the genre has to offer.

Batoru rowaiaru (2000) Directed by Kinji Fukasaku

(Review originally written at 21 March 2009)

All you need for a great movie is a good and original concept. At least that is what this movie suggests. It's daring and unique concept makes this an original movie for sure but it handles its concept also with lots of class and depth, making this simply a brilliant Japanese movie from the late Kinji Fukasaku.

Out of all Japanese movies I've seen so far, this is also the one that is the most Americanized. Normally this isn't a very good sign when a 'foreign' movie gets made in Hollywood-style but this movie is truly an exception to this. The fact that this movie feels Hollywood like is also a reason why this movie is perfectly watchable and accessible, even for those who aren't at custom with movies from outside of the United States.

But however this really doesn't mean that this movie is your average typical Hollywood work. Quite on the contrary. The movie has a quite daring concept, that perhaps also sounds silly and unlikely at first but in the movie gets delivered as a real realistic and effective one.

The movie can be seen as a protest against modern (Japanese) society and perhaps also the media. It gives "Batoru rowaiaru" also some more depth with its story and themes. It's not just its concept that makes this a great and original movie but also truly the handling of it all.

The main concept is very simple but at the same time very intriguing. It raises some real moral questions about what you would do when you get into a situation like this. The story is about an average Japanese ninth-grade school class who are being forced to kill each other on a remote island in a freaky death-match, in which the only survivor after 3 days gets to get back home. If more than 1 person is still alive after 3 days, everyone dies. This all due to the Battle Royale Act, that is called to life due to the highly increasing insubordination of the Japanese youth, that causes the Japanese economy to decrease rapidly.

The movie has lots of different characters in it, of which some have less problems with killing their friends than others. Some play the game really fanatically, while others team up, in order to survive longer and also to try and find a way to end the game without having to kill their friends. Everyone plays their own game and no matter what their intentions and morals are, all are being forced to do something against their own nature, due to the very unusual circumstance they find themselves in.

The diversity of characters also ensures that the movie never gets boring or 'more of the same' all of the time. The movie has some real great characters in it that are big movie stereotypes but really work out well for this type of movie. It gives lots of different characters room but never without loosing focus on its two main characters. The fact that most youngsters are being played by real teenagers also helps. It increases the credibility and also makes it easier to identify with characters.

Of course the movie is also filled with violence, done Japanese-style. The movie is pretty straight-forward with its violence, from pretty early on already into the movie. Again, this also really adds to the realism and overall credibility of the movie. For Japanese standards its also a pretty expensive and big looking movie with its action, even though the movie only cost a mere $4,500,000 to make. Due to its nature the movie never became a big success outside of Japan, since no distributors dared to buy the movie and release it in different countries. In Japan the movie remains one of the most successful box office successes and the movie has also really founds its way outside of the Japanese boundaries and the movie now days is known in most countries and considered to be a cult-classic already.

One of the most daring and original movies I've seen in a while.

Remember the Titans (2000) Directed by Boaz Yakin

(Review originally written at 11 January 2009)

Well, at least this movie was better than the first. This is because of the simple reason that this movie is so entertaining to watch. It doesn't try to impress but it just brings some simple and good B-movie horror fun!

It must be also due to the movie its settings that this movie is such a fun one to watch. The entire movie is set at an amusement park.

The Ghoulies are more like Gremlins in this movie. In the first movie they were only walking around without serving a real purpose. In this movie they are the heart and soul of the entire picture. They are causing some mayhem and each and every Ghoulie has a distinctive character of its own.

It's a good thing the movie doesn't take itself too serious. It gives the movie a good campy feel and look over it. The movie is often being plain silly and it doesn't try to make sense or create a believable story. Something that the first "Ghoulies" movie didn't do. So really, this movie is surprisingly better and much more watchable than its predecessor.

Perhaps the movie is being a bit too silly and not serious enough at times. This really goes at the expense of the movie its horror. I feel that as if this movie would had been more effective with its horror as well, this movie would had been an even better one to watch. The movie doesn't really have any scares or gore in it.

Of course nothing of this movie really impresses. The acting and story-line are all weak and kept thin. Perhaps you have to be really into the genre to appreciate and enjoy this movie simply for what it is; some simple, fun entertainment!
