Garbage (2013) Directed by Phil Volken

All things considering, this movie could have been a lot worse!

A movie with a title such as "Garbage" should already raise a few eyebrows, especially when you read what its concept is all about. But in all fairness, the movie is a pretty decent and cute one within its genre.

it isn't the silly type of comedy that you perhaps expect this movie to be. Won't say that it's a subtle one as well but still, the movie never goes overboard with its comedy and doesn't go for the cheap, simple and predictable sort of laughs. It puts a bit more effort into it than, lets say, the average genre movie of this caliber.

It's simply an enjoyable and cute sort of movie, with some likable characters. The main premise of the movie isn't all that original but I have to say that it handles its concept well and does a good job with its storytelling. There are a few things in it that they could have explored a bit further and better but on the other hand, if it did, it could have potentially provided the movie with some needless and pointless distractions, so perhaps it's a positive thing that this movie remains mostly a simple and underdeveloped one.

I also liked the settings of the movie. It was a pretty good and clever move to let this movie take place in the middle of Hollywood, where tons of celebrities from the movie industry live. Some of them even appear in this movie, in some small cameos, as themselves (Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah, William Baldwin, Steven Bauer, etcetera). Because the movie is set in Hollywood but the story is seen and told through the eyes of garbage men, the movie turns into a bit of a parody of Hollywood and some of its celebrities, without having to truly ridicule anything or anyone. Just some small references and quick pieces of dialog are enough for this movie and its comedy.

The acting was also pretty decent. The two main leads, Jed Rees and Jon Huck, aren't the best know actors but they simply did a good job with their roles and the comedy. Besides, they are convincing buddies, even though they have some very different personalities. Some of the other character remain a bit too much in the background but that's not a big issue, since its two main leads are perfectly capable of carrying this movie on their own.

Just go ahead and give this movie a shot. It's a pretty fun one overall!

Counterpunch (2013) Directed by Kenneth Castillo

That Danny Trejo sure is appearing in a lot of bad movies lately! Oh well, guess that it what happens when you say yes to just about everything and appear in like 12 movies each year.

But then again, this isn't a Danny Trejo movie at all, so fans be warned. He's nothing but a bit part in this and actually very easily could had been left out of the movie. But the movie has far more problems than just that.

Thing with the movie is that it's trying to be serious drama but the movie is literally filled with some unrealistic and unlikely developments, characters and dialog. The movie never really develops anything but it simply just tells you stuff. When the movie tells you someone is a bad mother without really showing why, the movie expect you to simply accept it and go along with it. And when the movie tells you someone is a bad person, or a good fighter, they expect you to believe them! It's all too forced and also really a very black and white movie with all of its themes. Someone or something is either completely good or the complete opposite, except for its main character maybe.

Because there is such a bad buildup to all of its emotions and drama, this isn't exactly the most engaging movie to watch out there. It's barely an interesting enough one, also since the story is laking some true gravity. They claim it's based on a true story but you know how these things go; most of the times its filled with more fiction than facts. And I don't mind that too much, as long as the fiction helps to make the movie a better or more engaging one, which however clearly wasn't the case with this movie though.

It really all gets made worse by all of its dialog. The dialog is supposed to create some realistic and tension filled moments in this movie but it falls incredibly flat instead. It's so phony. No real people talk like this and they create problems out of absolutely nowhere. This still was the thing that annoyed me the most about this movie. Forget the story, the characters or actors, the dialog is still the absolute worst!

It's not like I entirely hated watching this movie but it still feels like a very pointless and a far from impressive or even good enough one.

The Truth (2012) Directed by Damian Lee

It's true this is the sort of movie that works better with a more smooth style and a bigger director and actors involved but the movie is what is it and it really isn't being anything too bad at all!

Well, it's also definitely true the movie thinks its being something more clever and important than it in fact truly is but as far as these movies go, this is not a bad attempt. Of course especially when considering this is not a big movie with a not so high budget or big studio behind it involved.

It's the sort of political thriller, in which a man gets himself involved to bring down a big company. But don't worry, that doesn't mean this movie consists out of just talking and people sitting behind desks but it really in fact is an action loaded movie as well, which sort of goes at the expense of its credibility but it at the same time also helps to make this a more pleasant movie to watch.

The story itself didn't seem solid enough anyway to carry this movie over. Like I said, it's not as clever or heavy as it pretends to be and besides never gets all too involving to follow but at least it never gets poor or ridicules. Maybe it all would had been more interesting if the story in fact got based on a true story. That way it wouldn't had only been more interesting but also would had a certain amount of gravity and importance to it, which is something this movie desperately was searching for throughout.

It also has a bit too many distractions in it as well. It features some formulaic movie stuff, all put in there to strengthen the movie its drama and gravity but it actually works against the movie, since it doesn't feel very organic to its story.

You could say this movie is a bit of a weird blend between realistic and formulaic- and forced movie elements but it still for most part works out. Not that this movie shall win any big awards or is one that stays on your mind for long but it's still a movie to have a decent 106 minutes with, when you have absolutely nothing better to do or watch.

The movie does have some big and well known names in it, such as Andy Garcia, Forest Whitaker and Eva Longoria but it's still truly lacking a solid A-list actor as the movie its main character, that could had pushed this movie up a notch. Nothing against Andy Garcia but he has always been an actor who is better playing supporting roles and it's also true that his age is really starting to show by now. I didn't even recognize him at first!

It's a good enough movie, as long as your expectations for it aren't too high!

Werewolf: The Beast Among Us (2012) (V) Directed by Louis Morneau

Seemed at first that this movie was going to be a pretty decent one but as it turned it, it was being nothing more and nothing less but a disappointing B-monster movie flick.

There are countless of Dracula flicks, a whole bunch of Frankenstein movies and some Mummy movies as well but werewolf movies obviously are a less common sort of occurrence. And it's not hard to see why really. A werewolf movie requires good special effects and makeup in order to make everything convincing enough and there is only so much you can do with your monster really, also since he/she simply can't speak and can only behave in an animal like way. So every time a new werewolf movie gets released its receiving some sort of attention, since it's still being a bit of a novelty.

This movie however is being a whole bunch of stuff, except for a good werewolf really.

Thing with its story is that it has far too many distraction in it and never seems to truly be about the hunt for the werewolf. You could call the movie original for that but problem with it is that the movie just never works out as anything interesting or entertaining enough, which all is mostly due to its story and the approach it's taking.

Reason why the movie also has far too many distractions in it is because it really isn't holding back with its characters. There are just far too many of them, or perhaps it feels that way because all of them start to look the same after awhile and seem to add nothing, since none of them really has a strong, distinctive or interesting enough personality. The movie also most definitely could had used a strong, heroic main character.

It's also being the cheap sort of monster movie, shot entirely in Romania and with a constant dark look to it. This specific look is always used to give the movie a bit of flair and atmosphere but foremost to conceal that this is being a low budget production you're watching. And in this case the movie is also being truly too dark in certain parts, making it hard to tell what is going on at times.

There were also several other things that constantly took me out of the movie. One was its music, which was mostly having modern sounding instruments in it, which just didn't sounded very suiting, considering this is a period piece, set in the 19th century. Also the looks of all of the actors was annoying. All of them lived in dark, dirty places, yet all of them are perfectly clean looking with their skin, teeth and hair. Seriously, how hard could it be to simply avoid the shower for a couple of days or at least not wash your hair for a while. It probably sounds somewhat nitpicking all but these were all minor distractions, which constantly took me out of the movie.

Perhaps I would had been less distractive if the movie its actors actually helped to let things work out more convincingly. But none of the actors involved are among the most talented ones and I'm sure about it that most of them shall disappear further into obscurity, within the next few years. In that regard it's also weird seeing Stephen Rea in this. An actor who normally very carefully picks his parts and is perhaps one of the last actors you ever expect to see in a cheap horror flick, such as this one. I admit that he still was good but he just couldn't safe this movie or lift it up to an higher level. His role was too limited for that and the writing too poor and lacking.

Not interesting with its story, not enough werewolf in it to consider this a good, entertaining werewolf/horror movie, lacking shallow characters, played by incapable actors. No, there just is no reason why you should ever watch this movie really, not even, or maybe especially not, when you're interested in werewolves.
