Help me out here, how come this movie liked so much? From a horror perspective, it was a really bad movie, all across the board, in my opinion.
Seems that most people like this movie because it's an original take on the genre. But a different and original take doesn't make your horror movie necessarily an effective and good one to watch as well.
That probably was the biggest problem with this movie for me; it really wasn't a very effective one. It never felt creepy, in either a tense or mysterious kind of way. It besides was lacking scares and even the gore was disappointing in my opinion. I don't know, I can't really put my finger on it as to why but the gore looked terribly fake to me. There was something about the blood that just wasn't looking right. Don't know it it was the color or its consistency, or maybe just the fact that basically all characters get covered in so much blood, that it just starts to look ineffective after a while.
Another huge problem for me was the movie its villain, played by Luke Evans. This definitely seemed like the type of movie that would have benefited more from having a monstrous/supernatural type of evil villain or perhaps a more of a nameless/faceless Michael Myers type of character. Luke Evans is just too 'human' in this like to ever become scary or effective enough as a villain/killer.

I have to say that the acting was pretty weak in this one. Yes, even by normal genre standards. It doesn't matter what gruesome things happen, or who gets killed, the characters all continue to do some stupid and selfish things. Granted, that most of this is due to the way how this movie is written and directed but the actors themselves also completely fail to convey any sort of emotions, during the movie its supposedly tense and gruesome moments.
Just another low budget horror flick, that isn't really worth your time, no matter whether you are really into the genre or not.

It's good to see that the series is improving and maturing with basically every new movie but it still has a long road to go!
Maybe, just maybe this is my favorite movie out of the series, as of yet. Reason why I liked it was because it had some more depth and decent emotions to it, as the characters have clearly matured more over the past few years.
As an action movie, it's on to par as well with other modern recent genre flick, such as "A Good Day to Die Hard", "The Expendables" movies and "Olympus Has Fallen", just to name a random few, that come to mind. Movies that are not all that great story-wise but still movies that serve their purpose and beside offer some well executed and fine looking action moments in it. Movies that still have plenty wrong with them but remain watchable enough ones, for what they are.
And sure, once you really start analyzing this movie, it's a pretty far fetched and dumb one, that often doesn't make any sense but if you decide to just go along with it, chances are you will be having a pretty good time with it. It doesn't really ever slow down and features plenty of (long) action sequences in it to enjoy. And no, not just car related stuff but plenty of other action elements as well.

It's also getting somewhat annoying to see how characters keep changing alliances in the series. Good guys turning bad, bad guys turning good. Good guys helping out bad guys, bad guys helping out good ones. make up your mind already! And when someone dies in one movie, stop bringing them back for the sequels, especially when their death left no room or whatsoever for any form of debate or doubt.
I have to say that Dwayne Johnson is a truly great addition to the franchise, as he already showed before in the previous installment; "Fast Five". I truly hope he'll take over the whole franchise one day and become the one main focus of it. He's charismatic, he's funny and he of course handles all of the action very well. Besides, he's truly turning into a pretty good actor as well, much better than Vin Diesel anyway. It's also enjoyable to see Luke Evans as the main villain in this but they truly could and should have used him better and some more at times.
A silly and most certainly not great movie but it's good enough for what it is!

The Raven (2012) Directed by James McTeigue

Well, not much to say about this movie really. It's not bad but it's definitely nothing memorable or impressive to watch either. It's all being good and entertaining enough to keep watching but by the end of it you won't feel like you got an awful lot out of the movie.
I think that the biggest problem of the movie is that it's being a very straightforward mystery/thriller, which at the same time also makes it a very standard and formulaic one. Normally I would complain when a movie has too many distractions in it but in this case it most likely wouldn't had harmed this movie. Some more character, or some more different story lines would had perhaps made this movie a more interesting one.
The movie now becomes a bit tiresome after a while. There is not enough variation and the movie just never really manages to become a tense one, with any of its mystery or thriller elements. Who knows, maybe it also was the movie its low budget that prevented it from ever making a real impact and the reason why the movie seems to be lacking the right required type of atmosphere.
A problem of the movie also lies with its main character. No, I'm not saying that John Cusack is a poor actor in this movie but his character simply isn't being a good or interesting enough. There was so much they could had done, after all he plays Edgar Allan Poe in this movie but it feels as if the film-makers were holding back with just about everything and decided to play things safe, making this a very standard and therefore also predictable little movie.
No it's not a horrible movie to watch but just a movie that offers far too little to its viewers.
