(Review originally written at 16 April 2005)

"Fucking Åmål" and its story is very pure and touching. The characters are perfectly realistic and the way the story is told is very believable. Nothing in the movie feels overdone or forced which makes the emotions and some of the scene's very gripping.

Everything in the movie feels pure and realistic. Everyone had people that were kind of like Elin and Agnes at their school and everyone had friends like Markus and Johan and everyone had to deal with the different kind of emotions at school that are handled in this movie. Not necessarily the emotions of accepting your sexuality but more the emotions of being in love, being popular/unpopular, heartbroken, bored, having issues with friends or family and being unsatisfied with your life. Everyone has dealt with most of these things when they went to school, which makes a lot of the movie recognizable and you should be able to relate with at least some of the characters and events throughout the movie.

Also what makes this movie touching and pure are the realistic performances and dialogs. Finally some teenagers really played by teenagers! I hate it in a movie when a 16 year old is played by an 25 year old, like very often is the case in Hollywood movies. Alexandra Dahlström and Rebecka Liljeberg portray their characters in a very pure way and make the emotions and the movie in general realistic. I also love the way Agnes her family is portrayed in the movie.

The length of the movie is just as long (-or rather said; short) as needed. It doesn't tell anymore than is really necessary but yet takes it time to build up the characters and the emotions.

The movie is brilliantly directed and written and has some most excellent cinematography and all of that combined with the performances is what makes "Fucking Åmål" a little masterpiece

9/10
