The Heat (2013) Directed by Paul Feig

Well, the movie as it is isn't a terribly bad buddy cop flick but I still had plenty of problems with it.

Of course the movie is trying to be original by instead of featuring two male leads, feature two female cops as the movie its lead characters. The only problem though is that some of the genre specific comedy just works out better with male main characters involved.

Here's the problem with crude female comedy; When guys get rude with a person, in lets say another average buddy cop flick, they do it with a reason. They try to get information for instance or are simply joking around and messing with each other, in a brotherly type of way. When female characters get rude they do it because they genuinely don't like a person. Or at least that's always the way it feels like. The two main leads, played by Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, are basically rude to every person, for absolutely no good reason and really mess with some 'innocent' people, all in the name of comedy. No wonder most people don't like cops. It are movies like this that give them a really bad name! So, every time Melissa McCarthy starts yelling at someone or cusses someone out or throws a phone book at some person, it feels like she is doing it because she is genuinely angry and not because she is passionate about something or is simply trying to get the job done. It's hard to like characters like this really, when they are mostly rude and extremely arrogant ones and do some absolutely despicable things at times.

But oh well, at least the movie, surprisingly enough, doesn't ever get too annoying with its comedy and characters. And yes, there are some good laughs in this movie but I wouldn't exactly call this a laugh-riot. Most of the jokes are pretty formulaic but they are well executed nevertheless. It makes this a watchable enough comedy but just nothing I would ever recommend to anyone.

I also can't really tell you much about the story since this appears to be one of those type of movies in which its story comes secondary. The movie is all about setting up the next joke and crazy situation, rather than being busy trying to tell a coherent and engaging story. It feels a bit messy all, since the movie definitely loses its focus at times. In its core, the story also feels a bit too simplistic and formulaic, causing the movie to never rise above the level of average.

And really, Melissa McCarthy isn't a bad actress and she's genuinely one of the most talented female comedy actors out there but I wish she would start playing different roles. She's playing the same type of rude and loud, obnoxious characters in every movie, which isn't a weird or uncommon thing for comedians to do but in her case it's starting to become a bit tiresome and she's most likely also perfectly capable of doing different and far better things.

It's not as bas as you probably fear it is and maybe it's actually even the best buddy cop flick in recent years but that still doesn't make this a standout- or hilarious type of, perfect, comedy.

Identity Thief (2013) Directed by Seth Gordon

There are plenty of things wrong with this movie, next to its obvious problems.

It isn't just its main concept that's a bad and totally wrong one for a comedy but also the way it got handled. I actually would have been OK with this movie and its concept, if only it would have been able to actually amuse me and make me laugh, every once in a while. After all, it's not like having an offensive main plot line with some despicable characters in it is anything new for a comedy to feature but in this particular movie it just doesn't work out too well.

I also don't get what these type of movies are trying to do and tell with its story. What are the things that we are supposed to take out of it? That no matter how much you misbehave, lie and steal, you always still should get some sympathy? Because that surely was the approach the movie is taking with its story in its second half, which also was the point that I completely started to loose interest and all respect for this movie.

The Melissa McCarthy does some absolute horrible- and at times just plain rude things to the movie its main character, played by Jason Bateman. And it's all really uncalled for really. All things considering, the Bateman character is extremely polite and patient with the Melissa McCarthy character, even though she is pretty much busy messing with- and destroying his life. Yet somehow, the movie really expects you to still like her and sympathize for her character. But how is that possible, if the movie doesn't show any redeeming qualities about her character?

The movie seems to think it's able to get away with everything, just in the name of comedy. It doesn't always work out that easily though. You may be able to get away with it once you first establish a solid foundation for the movie, with an amusing and engaging comedy concept and some good, likable, characters to care for. All things this movie forget or just simply failed at.

Thing I specifically didn't really liked about the movie its comedy is that it's all some very rude stuff. Some things are absolutely uncalled for and pretty needless for its main plot as well. It wasn't ever really that funny and it came across like some very random stuff that absolutely wasn't ever needed to help to move its main plot forward. I really didn't liked how basically ever character they came across on their trip, seemed to dislike the Jason Bateman character, for no real good reason and absolutely disrespected him and treated him like dirt, while he actually is being the nicest guy out of this entire movie.

strangely enough I still liked the acting. Yes, I even liked Melissa McCarthy's performance. Despite the fact that I couldn't stand her character and even hated her at points, I still couldn't dislike McCarthy's performance. I believe it really shows that none of the actor's were at fault but it truly was the movie its script and directing approach by Seth Gordon that turned this movie into an absolute horrible one.

There were actually also still some side-plots that seemed like interesting ones but by the end of the movie, they were nothing but some wasted potential. For instance, the plot lines involving the Robert Patrick, Genesis Rodriguez and T.I. (who?) character all could had been potentially good and fun ones but the way they were handled in this movie only made them seem like some absolute pointless and needlessly distracting ones.

A just never really funny movie, with a poor concept and handling of it.

The Hangover Part III (2013) Directed by Todd Phillips

Well, I'm kind of weird about The Hangover movies. I liked the second one better than the first and I'm also quite fond of this movie, while it seems that I'm a minority on this.

Guess that one of the main reason why this movie isn't as liked as much is because it isn't following the usual 'Hangover-formula'. So no waking up at a weird place, with weird things and animals surrounding our main heroes, while they remember absolutely nothing about what happened the previous night and try to piece things together, as the story moves along. I don't mind this formula and would have been happy to seen it used in this movie as well but at the same time I can also understand why they tried to do something different, this time around. There is of course a great danger that this movie would be nothing more but a rehash of the previous two movies, once it started using the same sort of formula. This was actually something that already started to bother a lot of people, when the second movie of the trilogy came out.

I kind of agree that this movie doesn't really feel like a part of a trilogy but it's still definitely a sequel, in the sense that it's a continuation of the stories of its main characters. The approach to the story is somewhat different but all of the characters and the humor are still definitely the same. No big surprise, since all 3 movies are done by basically the same cast & crew. Director Todd Phillips directed all three movies and I have always kind of liked his comedy and directing approach. He often picks some very formulaic and simplistic sounding comedy concept but always manages to turn it into something special and unexpected. It's also therefore why his comedies are often better and more effective ones to watch than the usual genre attempts, done by different people. It's therefore also absolutely ludicrous to call this movie a bad one, in my opinion. I can understand it being your least favorite one out of the whole trilogy but please don't mistake it for a bad movie as well!

Thing that it all eventually comes down to, is that I was simply entertained by this movie, all throughout It isn't necessarily saying anything about its quality or originality but it is saying something about its effectiveness. As a comedy this movie definitely serves its purpose and it serves it well! Some of the situations made me laugh, some of its dialog made me laugh, most characters made me laugh, so that all makes this a pretty effective comedy in my book!

Of course it's definitely not without its flaws or weaknesses. After all, this is also my least favorite Hangover movie out of the trilogy, so I still had plenty of problems with it as well. The story and comedy doesn't always feel like it's the best or cleverest thing ever and the movie and there's a bit of overkill in the movie. Sometimes less is more and sometimes some things are just funnier and better in smaller doses. This for instance goes for the Chow character. He plays a pretty big role in this movie but he's definitely better, funnier and more tolerable when he shows up for just a couple of minutes, as he for instance did in the first movie.

I also can't really say that this movie feels like closure. There is nothing about this movie that indicates that this could possibly be the last Hanogover movie. It's of course possible that we'll indeed get to see more Hangover movies in the future but the problem is that this movie loves to advertise itself as the end of the trilogy, like it's bringing closure and it's being the ultimate finale. None of that is true really but it's not really something that I'm holding against the movie. It's wrong advertising but you can't blame the movie itself for this.

Simply enjoy it for what it is; a good, quality, comedy. Don't expect the ultimate Hangover movie or one that plays by the exact same 'rules' as the previous two movie.
