So Undercover (2012) Directed by Tom Vaughan

It's clear I'm not a part of the movie its target audience but to be fair, I can still see this movie entertain those, to whom this movie got targeted, which are 14-16 year old girls, or something close to that.

As simple and incredibly straightforward as this movie is, it does serves its purpose well enough. There really isn't much to the story but I do believe that girls are still going to appreciate it, as well as its characters and situations. It puts a young girl, played by Miley Cyrus, in the lead and makes her the sort of action-hero-star of the movie. Not that the movie is spectacular in any way or is filled with action but I still believe that it's a strong, young, female character, that young girls look up to and want to be like.

Not that Miley Cyrus is all that great though. As weird as it may sound, she actually feels a too old for the part. She is just too mature looking and sounding to play a school girl, even though the plot still involves she is a detective, who's going undercover at a college, as a student.

It's actually amazing how incredibly bland and uninteresting the story was. To be frank, I even had absolutely no idea what it all was supposed to be about in the first place. But strangely enough this didn't made this movie an horrible one to watch. It's probably because the movie is a very tame and innocent movie, in which nothing ever gets annoying or exaggerated. Even the characters, comedy and dialog were all tolerable in this, which was something I didn't really expected from this movie.

It's not a great movie by any means but it still works out well within its genre is definitely a watchable one for, lets say, 14-16 year old girls.

Grosse Pointe Blank (1997) Directed by George Armitage

(Review originally written at 19 August 2008)

This movie has basically everything in it; comedy, action, romance, drama and whatever more. It doesn't has too much of everything, though perhaps also not enough of some elements.

If this movie was done even a bit more light and with a tad bit more comedy added to it, such as for instance in the style of "Midnight Run" or a Coen-brothers movie, this movie would had been just perfect and possible one among my favorites.

It's really not like this movie is a failure now but I couldn't help wondering while watching this movie how much better it actually all could had been if it had been a bit more edgier at times. It could had been edgier with its comedy and characters. There are many characters being introduced in this movie but you'll have the feeling most of them are more or less the same. Still the movie works out just fine, due to its mix of genres and therefor its originality. It all works out effectively and you'll basically just have a great time watching this movie.

It's also a really well written movie, not just because of its original concept but also because of its fine written dialog. It of course helps that the movie features some great actors to deliver the lines. It's not really the type of movie that follows one main plot-line with a start, middle-point and ending to it but more a movie that stays close to the main character as he wanders through the movie. In a way it foremost is a character movie about a hit-man with emotional problems, trying to re-connect to his past again as he gets send on a job in the same town were his high-school reunion is being held. Sounds dramatic but luckily "Grosse Pointe Blank" is a real light movie to watch, that never forgets that it shouldn't take itself too serious. It's not a movie that will make you laugh out loud but its simply a movie that entertains and therefor it can be regarded as an effective movie.

John Cusack is perfectly cast in his role, even though he basically is one of those actors who plays his characters always the same way over and over again. Well, I like him anyway as an actor. Minnie Driver also plays a good female role and Dan Aykroyd, Alan Arkin and Joan Cusack are also all present, among many others.

Even though it wasn't all as great and effective as it truly could had been, I still enjoyed watching it.

Old School (2003) Directed by Todd Phillips

(Review originally written at 6 October 2007)

Basically this is a great comedy to watch late at night. It's nothing too fancy or original but it's basically good quality entertainment, from a great genre director and a real solid cast, filled with some of the best actors currently active in the genre.

The real most surprising thing about "Old School" is its cast. It's not only filled with some great leading actors but also lots of famous faces in small roles and cameos, such as Juliette Lewis, Elisha Cuthbert, Seann William Scott and Harve Presnell, among others. But of course the movie gets carried by the three main leading men; Luke Wilson, Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn. Will Ferrell is such a show stealer! He has the best moments and lines in the movie. And Vince Vaughn once again shows that he is a great actor actually.

Perhaps the concept of the movie called for some more and better thought of jokes but nevertheless the movie doesn't feel as if it's not entertaining enough already now. In the end not all of the plot-lines get wrapped up properly or satisfactorily but you know, in a comedy you just tend to forgive this sort of storytelling flaws.

What I liked about the movie is that it greatly mixes the comical and the more dramatic and personal elements of the movie. The one doesn't distract from the other, which is I think due to the professional genre directing of genre specialist Todd Phillips, who also directed movies such as "Road Trip" and "Starsky & Hutch".

It's probably not a comedy that will go in the books as the most hilarious or best one of all time but the movie serves its purpose and that's to simply entertaining the viewer, with more than a couple of good laughs.
