JCVD (2008) Directed by Mabrouk El Mechri

This is Jean-Claude Van Damme's best movie in years. Not that I'm an expert on Van Damme movies but I'm of course well aware of the reputation of all of his movies and have seen enough of them to know that 90% of them don't ever, in any way, surpasses the level of a B-movie. But there actually is absolutely nothing B-movie like about this movie though, which is part of the reason why it's a pretty enjoyable and good one.

Of course the biggest reason why this movie is so perfectly watchable is because it's a fun and very self aware one. It's more of a parody and comedy than a serious action flick really, in which Jean-Claude Van Damme plays the lead role as himself. And not necessarily just in a comical type of way but also in a very profound and honest one. In a strange way you can say that this movie feels a bit like a biopic as well, were it not for the fact that of course everything in this movie was scripted.

And the movie even features a pretty decent and original story. I was expecting a sort of wrong person, at the wrong place, at the wrong time, type of movie. A "Die Hard" type of action flick so to speak but I was surprised to not only find out that the movie was something completely different but also because of how original it was and how well it worked out. Well, for most part though. The movie does become a bit tiresome after a while, due to the way how the story is told.

With some imagination you can still call this an action flick, even though there really hardly is any action in it and it truly is more of a comedy and even a bit of a heartfelt drama, that however is still shot and directed as a true action movie. It's a real good looking movie, with a pretty good atmosphere and fast paced directing by Mabrouk El Mechri. The story however is still lacking at some points. It feels like the movie and its story still had more potential in it really and instead of being just good, this really could have been a great movie, considering its main premise.

Main problem with the story and the way it is being told, is that it for most part consists out of the same events, that constantly get told from different perspectives. So every time you think that the story is ready to move along, it's moving back again, by telling you the same events all over again, only this time shown from a different perspective. Of course this also helps to move the story forward some times but not at always. Sometimes it comes across as a bit gimmicky and just isn't adding enough to either the story- and character developments. It only distracts, slows the movie down and makes it feel overlong. Even though the actual movie is only 97 minutes short, it feels like it's well over 2 hours long and I was even getting a bit bored with it toward the end.

Still the movie deserves plenty of credit. Even though this obviously wasn't a very expensive movie to make and it got done outside of Hollywood, in Van Damme's native Belgium, it's totally feeling and looking like an expensive and very professional Hollywood production. It of course also deserves plenty of credit for its original concept, even though the execution of it feels somewhat lacking at times.

It also is a movie in which Jean-Claude Van Damme truly has to act, even though he mostly is just playing himself. I'm sure he had plenty of fun with it and it truly is HIS movie, perhaps more so than any other movie that he had done. Now, I won't claim that Van Damme is an outstanding actor in this but it's good to see that he has some more range than just delivering one liners and kicking people's butts. He definitely did a more than capable job!

A perfectly watchable and fun Van Damme movie, even to those we aren't familiar with- or big fans of him and the work he has done in the past.

U.F.O. (2012) Directed by Dominic Burns

One of the messiest alien invasion movies I have ever seen! I'm even reluctant to call this an alien invasion movie in the first place, since the movie seems to be more busy focusing on- and doing a whole bunch of different unrelated stuff instead.

I do see and understand the approach for this movie was probably a deliberate one. It seems to be a movie that wants to focus more on its characters and be about the human psyche in a the kind of situation, as presented in this movie. Problem however is that the movie is lacking any depth and a certain sense of realism and credibility to ever allow any of it to work out.

It actually seems like this movie at first got written as a comedy but just before shooting started, they decided to do it as a straight movie instead. The characters, the way they respond to certain things, the way they run into all sorts of crazy stuff, that has nothing to do really with the alien invasion plot. This all makes it seem like the movie was meant to be a comedy at one point, though I'm not sure if this truly was the case of course. Perhaps it's simply bad writing, which doesn't sound like a very far fetched or illogical explanation.

Fore the movie does feel like an incredibly messy one, with a story that's all over the place. There is a true lack of focus and the messy camera-work and editing, that was meant to give the movie style and pace, makes things even harder to watch and follow. The movie often really doesn't make any sense and the story seems to be going absolutely nowhere.

And most likely because it's a low-budget movie, it often stretches things out, for as long as possible. It's also constantly very busy trying to avoid any science-fiction related stuff for as much as it can, which is an odd thing to do of course for an alien invasion movie.

Also don't really know why Jean-Claude Van Damme shows up in this, Well, actually I do know, his daughter Bianca Bree plays a lead role in this but I don't see Pierce Brosnan in this movie as well, even though his son Sean Brosnan also plays a lead role in this. Seriously, it's annoying how Van Damme keeps involving his children with his work and now vice versa as well. This is not really helping anyone's career to move forward, especially not by appearing in a movie such as this. And Jean-Claude Van Damme lovers be warned; this is not a JCVD flick at all, so please don't expect to see any of the usual Jean-Claude Van Damme 'greatness' or awesomeness in this.

But on second thought, everybody should be warned and just simply, absolutely, skip this movie!

6 Bullets (2012) Directed by Ernie Barbarash

It doesn't take much to realize that this movie is basically being a cheap knockoff of the hit movie "Taken". It uses a similar type of concept, that involves human trafficking and parents who are willing to do everything in their power to get their kid back. In this case that means hiring Jean-Claude Van Damme, to gun- and knock down a whole bunch of bad guys, all talking with very thick accents.

Well, what can I say. Last time I checked I was still a man, so yes, I'm definitely able to appreciate some silly, overblown action-flicks from time to time. That of course does not mean that I'm not capable of seeing what a stupid and cheap looking movie this is but in all truth and honesty, this didn't prevented me from simply enjoying this movie.

You have to take it for what it is. Don't think too much about its story or pay that much attention to the movie its acting and other blatant flaws and weaknesses. Just go along with this movie, it's the only way to enjoy and appreciate it! I must say that the one thing I didn't liked about this movie and prevented me from truly fully enjoying it was that it was a cheap looking movie. I hate it when modern movies have such a cheap, fake look to it and it too often takes me out of the movie. Now, I do admit that in this case it sort of grew on me and after a while I wasn't all that bothered with it anymore.

But there are of course plenty of other indications that this was a rather cheap movie to make. The action never gets big or truly spectacular to watch and mostly consists out of gunfights and hand-to-hand combat, with an occasional small (and fake looking) explosion. But really, as far as cheap action-flicks go, you could do way worse than this movie.

The movie is making some weird turns at times. I mean, some of the developments and sequences aren't exactly the most convincing ones, especially not when you really start thinking too deep about it. I though it was especially weird how Jean-Claude Van Damme occasionally disappeared out of the movie, while he clearly was supposed to be the one main 'good' guy. I don't know, perhaps there were some scheduling issues and some of the scenes had to be rewritten, so that other characters could take his place? It certainly came across that way, or perhaps Van Damme somehow got injured and had to skip on some scenes in this movie. After all, the guy is 51 already and he's still doing the same sort of stuff he used to do as a young guy in movies.

That's actually a great thing about this movie. As 'old' as Jean-Claude Van Damme looked at times in this movie, he still shows he's perfectly capable of handling action and of playing a convincing and charismatic enough action-hero type of role. It did wished he would stop putting his own children in his movies though. I don't know, it's always a sort of a cop out to me once a person starts putting his family members in his movies. What, the can't get in the industry on their own? There is probably a good reason for that if that would be the case. In this particular movie, one of his sons and daughter star opposite him, also in some quite big roles.

It's not the best made and also not the most credible action movies out there but I really can't call it a bad one either. It's definitely watchable and of course especially for those who are into the genre.

The Expendables 2 (2012) Directed by Simon West

It definitely seemed a good move by Stallone to pass the torch on to Simon West and let him sit on the director's chair this time. Seemed that with the first "The Expendables" movie Stallone had a hard time balancing things out. The result was a pretty disappointing movie, in which not even the action come across as anything all that great or exciting. This definitely improved with this movie and while it's being far from a great one, it's being a pretty decent and entertaining genre flick!

Please don't ask me what this movie was all about, since I simply absolutely had no idea. But in all fairness, this often had been the case with big overblown action movies and it really doesn't make them any less spectacular or entertaining to watch. It's simply being a movie to have a good and fun time with and not to take too seriously.

And luckily the film-makers and actors took things not that serious either. It's the main reason why this movie works out much better and is simply being more fun than its predecessor. The movie and its jokes are more self aware this time around and they didn't just attempted to create a big action flick but also one that delivers on a more entertaining level.

So there is more fun, the action is better but those are not the only things this sequel improved on. Thing I also really liked about this movie was that it focused more on the team aspect. Everybody gets their moment to shine in this and basically every cast member gets to show off their action skills. Yes, even Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis get to do some serious action related stuff this time around. And it really is awesome seeing them fight literally alongside, along with Sylvester Stallone as well. It helps to make the final 30 minutes basically a fan boys dream and it also are the movie its final 30 minutes that are being the movie its best minutes, which sort of makes you wonder why the rest of the movie, as well as its predecessor, weren't being more like this as well.

And the movie brings in even more big action movie stars from the past this time. Jean-Claude Van Damme is being a pretty good villain, though he shows up in the movie pretty late and also gets to do far too little. Oh well, at least he was being good and enjoyable when he did appear on screen and is still in pretty good form as well, even though he is well in his 50's already. And I admit, it was also awesome to see Chuck Norris in this. Yes, his character is quite pointless and just an excuse to have Norris pop up in this movie but he perhaps was being the most fun character out of the entire movie and I actually do hope they bring him back and make him a part of the team for the next sequel. It's sort of funny how I know basically everything about this guy and his movies but this probably was being the first movie, in which he stars, that I had ever seen. Perhaps it should be time to pick up some of his earlier movies and have a blast with them as well.

Of course there are plenty of flaws in this movie, mostly story related but I'm simply happy about it that this movie at least learned from some of the mistakes it made with the previous movie and this one is simply being a good and enjoyable genre movie to watch. Still not as great and awesome as it by all rights should be but they are more on the right track with this one and lets all hope "The Expendables 3" is going to be the ultimate Expendables movie, that everybody is hoping and longing for, ever since the first movie got announced.
