Streets of Fire (1984) Directed by Walter Hill

This by no means shouldn't be a good movie to watch but yet it somehow works out as a very good and entertaining one.

There are a lot of silly and over-the-top things about this movie and perhaps that's the very same reason why it becomes such an entertaining one to watch. It has a silly and bad straightforward story in it, some over-the-top action (exploding motorcycles!) and some extremely bad B-acting performances by some of its actors. Seriously, Michael Paré is terrible in this but yet his performances really suits the movie and is part of the reason why it's such a perfectly fun and watchable one.

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that this movie is a pretty good one to watch, seeing how its directed by Walter Hill. His movies perhaps aren't amongst the best ones ever made but a lot of the movies he has done have grown into semi-classics and cult favorites, with of course "The Warriors" as the best known example.

The only thing that really matters about this movie is that's a fun one to watch. Forget about the story, forget about the acting, this is just simply a movie to enjoy and not one to think too hard about or nitpick to death. It serves its purpose and it serves it well!

It's really a typical 'cheap' '80's action flick, in the way how it looks, feels and sounds. The action is all good and while never anything truly spectacular it's always something very raw and enjoyable to watch and the movie features an '80's soundtrack that will make your head spin! Some people even consider this to be a musical, due to the Diane Lane character being a singer in this and the movie indeed also features more than a few songs in it.

Despite having mostly bad acting in it, there also are some good performances in this movie. I for instance really enjoyed Willem Dafoe's performance, as the main villain. I would even go as far to say that it's one of the best villainous roles he's ever played and that's of course saying a lot, seeing how many villains he has played throughout his career. He's just evil and insane in this and I loved it. Rick Moranis was also good and enjoyable as the movie's main comic relief, though it's not the usual 'Rick Moranis comical type of role' he's playing in this. His character has some more meat to it, so to speak.

Some enjoyable, over-the-top, '80's action fun!

Man of Steel (2013) Directed by Zack Snyder

You know something is wrong when I just can't say with absolute certainty that I liked this movie better than "Superman Returns".

"Superman Returns" arguably had a worse story but it did a better job at telling it. That's the main thing with this movie; I just never could get really into it, due to poor story handling. The pacing felt off and even though this is a 143 minutes long movie, it still felt rushed.

It just doesn't take the time for its story and characters to truly set itself up and develop into something interesting and engaging. It's as if every sequence is missing 1 or 2 scenes that would have helped the movie to develop its story, characters and emotions more effectively.

It felt like a very bland movie to me. I never felt any excitement, there was never any tension, it never moved me, it never surprised me with anything and it just failed to make an impact on me, in any shape or form. No, even entertainment-wise this movie falls kind of short, due to the way how it's constructed.

The movie starts off as a Star Wars type off science-fiction/action flick, it than starts to focus more on some its drama and after that it turns into a full blown, summer blockbuster, action-packed, popcorn flick. These different movie segments however don't blend together very well. The start on Krypton feels needlessly long (I mean, common! We all know Superman's origin story already) and overcomplicated, probably just to give Russell Crowe more screen time and stuff to do. The middle part doesn't work out that interestingly, due to it that it just doesn't seem able to do anything interesting with its characters and emotions and by the time the real big action starts to kick in, the movie has already worn you out, with its constantly fast pace, other 'minor' action and its (rushed) rapid story developments.

Guess they did try to give the Clark Kent character some more depth and personality and yes, I probably also like this Clark Kent better than any of the other Kent's from the past but once he turns into Superman, he's a far less interesting and fun character to watch, as weird as that may sound. The Clark in this movie feels more 'human' than any of his predecessors but the Superman character still remains a quite boring and bland one. The movie perhaps could have used some more humor at times but that simply wasn't the approach this movie was going for unfortunately. You could say it's taking itself a tad bit too serious, as is the current trend for modern superhero movies. This certainly goes at the expense of especially the movie its main character in this case.

Some people are at least going to like and appreciate this movie for its action. And yes, the second half of this movie offers plenty of that. Problem for me however was that it constantly seemed to be repeating itself and was relying too much on its special effects. I lost counts, the amount of times Superman or one of his fellow Kryptonians crashed into a building, during a fight scene. You should make a drinking game out of it! And there is just something terribly effective about watching a bunch of super human's, OK aliens in this case. having a go at each other. You know that every punch that gets thrown isn't going to sort any effect and all of the other stuff that is thrown and shot at them isn't neither.

Thing with movies that are heavy on its CGI also is that no matter how well they are made and awesome they look, back in your mind you always know you're watching something that isn't real and it feels like you're watching a very fancy video game, in which you yourself don't even get to do- or control anything or anyone. I'm not bashing this movie its special effects, since it's all fine looking but surely they could have held back a little during some of its sequences. The movie goes all out and just a tad bit over-the-top with its action and special effects toward the end, if you would ask me.

I know, I probably sound more negative than I should be. After all, I didn't hated the movie, not at all! It's just that there is so much wrong with it and so much potential had gone to waste. The movie as it is is a still watchable enough one but far from my favorite Superman telling. Kind of funny that the goofy, over-the-top, colorful looking- and significantly cheaper Superman movie from the '70's is still the best telling of the story till date!

Jumper (2008) Directed by Doug Liman

(Review originally written at 3 November 2008)

You know, some movies are just not made to shock the world or to break any box office records. They are just made to bring us some entertainment and I feel that "Jumper" does not fail at this.

Yes, there are more than a several things wrong with this movie and the story could be mostly blamed for that. It's a really simplistic story that makes the good old-Hollywood mistake to focus almost entirely on the love-story aspects than anything else really. Because of this its action and science-fiction/fantasy elements feel more like they got pushed to the back in this one. But also purely its story with its main plot is seriously lacking and is quite simplistic actually. A lot of things don't make an awful lot of sense, since they are simply not being explained every well enough in the movie and the movie is filled with mostly clichés and isn't really quite ever surprising enough.

Nevertheless the movie does not fail to entertain and it simply is one fine movie to kill some time with. It's simply a fun movie people! A perfect in-between movie so to speak, just as it must had been a perfect in-between movie for Doug Liman, David S. Goyer, Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson to make. It has one fine concept of never ending possibilities, which also opens the door for some sequels and/or spin-offs. A sequel has already been announced, with Doug Liman attached again to direct. Not that I will run to cinemas to watch it but I'll probably pick up the DVD when released if it is anything like this movie.

The movie is made good and fun by its concept, which is an imaginative one and one that can be used as an excuse to feature as many as possible landmarks and famous big cities and places within one movie. The movie handles its concept well, at least as well as its stories allows it anyway. It's just not a movie you should think about too much, that way you'll simply enjoy this movie for what it is.

Hayden Christensen never have been much of an action star but he is simply good in this movie and well cast. Contrary to popular believe, he can act really well. It's also fun to see Samuel L. Jackson in a villainous role for a change again and it's also nice to see Jamie Bell in such a big production and important role again.

It's a well made movie that is good looking and obviously cost some money to make. This can mostly be seen back in it's special effects of course, that aren't always convincing but are nice looking nevertheless. Doug Liman is a director who can do action really well and in a refreshing way. He doesn't attempt to let the movie look spectacular and he doesn't try to impress the viewers with any big mind-blowing action sequences but like I said, he knows to handle it in a good and refreshing way, which works out wonderfully for this movie.

A fun entertaining little movie for in between, that could had been great had it had a better and more present story though.
