Free Birds (2013) Directed by Jimmy Hayward

No proper story development, no proper character development. Are animated movies just being lazy nowadays? It sure seems so!

Is it fair to say that the CG animated movie genre is past its prime? Most genre movies nowadays seem to be simple rehashes of other ones and come across as quick cash grabs. It's as if the studios aren't trying as hard anymore to come up with anything unique or special anymore. As long as the movie sells and they can make some extra bucks on merchandising, the people up top are happy. It are movies like this that are causing the genre to come to a screeching halt, instead of helping it to move forward and keep pushing the envelop, with new techniques and approaches to the genre. There are just too many genre movies like this nowadays, even coming from some of the bigger and more 'revolutionary' animation studios, which is all sad and disappointing to note. The true creativity, drive, passion and love, that always could be found in these genre movie, seems all to be gone by now.

The fact that this is a mostly formulaic genre flick is only part of its problem. It's a way bigger problem for the movie that it just isn't a very well executed one. It doesn't even take the time for things to get set up and introduced properly. In the first few minutes we are introduced to a farm turkey, that thinks differently and looks different from his fellow turkeys, who are all living there with him, but how or why, we simply never get told. A few minutes later he's living in the White House (yeah, I know, don't ask) and a few minutes later again he gets recruited for a secret mission by some other turkey and together they travel back into time. Everything happens so fast and without a logical explanation. It's annoying really, especially when the movie keeps coming up with its own new convenient rules, right till the very end.

Everything about this movie is just too simple. I'm not even necessarily just talking about its story but also all of its characters and jokes, for instance. Of course there is a love interest and another character who is standing in the way of their love. And of course there is a villain who is just evil for the sake of being evil. And of course the two main characters have a falling out at one point. I know this is something basically all animated movies feature but it usually is something that isn't as distracting or becomes all quite as annoying and predictable as is the case in this movie. It's all because most other movies at least make an effort to be remotely creative or original with anything. This one isn't ever trying hard enough though.

It's also disappointing really how this movie is just barely ever becoming anything funny. The comedy, just like the entire movie, is far too simple, lazy and predictable. Even little kids will have to agree that this isn't a very funny movie, with also no real likable and entertaining enough characters in it. It's all far too forgettable, which is perhaps the best thing about this movie; it luckily won't stay in your memory for long.

Worse than "Planes" in my opinion, for what it's worth.

Hellbenders (2012) Directed by J.T. Petty

Don't really know why this movie isn't liked any better. Perhaps some people take offense to its concept but personally I thought this was a pretty solid and also certainly original little comedy.

A bunch of priests cursing, fighting, drinking and having sex perhaps may sound a bit lame and makes this sound like a one note movie but the truth is that it's actually being a pretty creative movie with its concept and it luckily isn't just constantly repeating the same jokes and patterns over and over again.

The movie as it is is a pretty fun and entertaining one to watch. It's a comedy, so of course it isn't one to take very seriously. The movie itself certainly isn't. It loves to exaggerate with its comedy and horror elements at times, without ever making anything truly ridicules. In my opinion the comedy and concept of the movie works out well due to all of its diverse characters and the actors that portray them. I definitely liked Clancy Brown, in particular.

The story itself isn't really anything surprising but at least I can say that this movie does have a story in it. Thing that often annoys me about these horror comedies is that its story always comes secondary. This movie definitely feels more story driven, with its constant developments. But again, nothing too original or surprising really, so I can understand why some people won't like it and just can't get into this movie. It's an original movie with its concept and comedy but not really ever with its story and storytelling.

But of course the most important thing about this movie still is its comedy. It perhaps isn't one that is going to make you burst out into laughing but it definitely is one that is a constantly fun and very occasionally a funny one to watch as well.

Give it a chance. You may end up liking it.

Balls of Fury (2007) Directed by Robert Ben Garant

(Review originally written at 13 June 2008)

Obviously this movie got inspired by the success of recent silly comedies and the ones about sports in particular. The movie has more misses then hits in it with its comedy and even though the movie certainly does has its moments, it's just not really a good or recommendable one to watch.

Well, I sort of like this recent silly comedies of this new decade, even though not all are of high quality. They are just so silly that you can't help but laughing. This movie unfortunately is not among the best silly comedies of last recent years. It begins real good and promising but once the main story starts to kick in the movie starts to sleep in and becomes an usual, formulaic, silly, predictable movie, that lacks far too many original or truly hilarious moments. The movie sort of gets better again once Christopher Walken makes his entrance but it's just all not good enough to make this an effective movie. The movie constantly keeps you thinking throughout; They could had really done a better job with this!

It's concept sounds hilarious on its own right and the movie and main story is a spoof of the Bruce Lee class "Enter the Dragon". That movie already sort of was a silly movie in its own right but in a good and almost brilliant way. "Balls of Fury" is far from ever being good or brilliant though.

Probably still the most hilarious element of the movie is the fact that Christopher Walken is in it. He plays his role of course deliberately from a serious angle which makes the comedy involving his character to work out all the better. His role is sort of too small though, also since he doesn't make his appearance until about halve way through the movie. It was as if he only was available for two weeks and they had to shoot all of his stuff in that time frame. None of the other main actors are really solid enough to fully carry this movie and some actors aren't even at the right place in this comedy.

For a good silly sports comedy, watch "Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story" instead.
