Seven Mummies (2006) Directed by Nick Quested

Oh my! I at first was still sort of OK with this movie, until it slowly started to develop into one big messy pile of nonsense.

Seems like they had a good enough idea for a main premise but basically no idea how to execute all of it. When the movie reaches its halfway-point, it feels as if the filmmakers themselves had given up on it as well. The result is a very random and messy second half, in which stuff isn't making any sense anymore. I had no idea what was happening but having said that, it was not like its first half way was much better really.

There is plenty of stuff that bothers me about this movie and its logic is one of them. No, it's not like I was taking this movie too serious, after all, how can you take a movie involving vampires and mummies serious in the first place? But you at least need to let things make sense into the context of your movie. I for instance really don't get why the prisoners didn't seem to be bothered about changing into normal clothes, after their escape. And for some odd reason no one seems to find it strange that they walk into a town, in which time stood still. They enter some sort of old wild west town, complete with cowboys and shady bartenders and ladies of pleasure.

I had no idea how to take this movie or where its story was supposed to be heading at, until it became apparent to me that it was supposed to be some sort of cheap and lesser "From Dusk Till Dawn" ripoff. Yes, complete with vampires, even though the movie its title would suggest otherwise. It even has Danny Trejo in it as well, though admittedly in a very limited role. And then again, what genre movie nowadays doesn't star Danny Trejo in it?

I still would have been OK with this movie if at the very least the movie was an entertaining one to watch. But sadly the movie is not half as fun as its title and premise would suggest. The bad writing, directing and acting pretty much sucks all of the fun out of the movie and make this a very bad and annoying one to watch instead.

So really, if you expect or want some good mummy and vampire fun, please look elsewhere, since this movie never delivers!

Night of the Templar (2012) Directed by Paul Sampson

At first I was going to applaud this movie. I mean, how many low-budget movies set in medieval times do you know? It however then soon started to become obvious this wasn't at all going to be a movie that was set at medieval times. Instead it's something completely different and the movie itself is actually mostly set in modern times.

And to be frank; most of the time I had absolutely no idea what was going on in this movie. It has a messy story and approach to it. What was this movie supposed to be exactly? A comedy? A slasher? A fantasy movie? This movie has a bit of everything in it, only not mixed together that very well.

And really, as purely a slasher this movie still had some potential in it. It's a shame this movie just never really fully goes into that direction with its approach or story.

The story as it is, is mostly going nowhere. At least not for its first half. You just don't know where the movie is going at and what it is trying to tell you with its main plot line and all of the seemingly random characters involved. It makes this somewhat of an odd and hard movie to watch but luckily it still has some entertainment going for it.

The movie luckily doesn't take itself too seriously, and so shouldn't its viewers. Because of this approach and style, the movie never becomes a boring, or offensively bad one but that's about the most positive thing I can say about this movie.

And isn't it funny how David Carradine, almost 4 years after his death, keeps popping up in movies. This isn't even the final movie he'll show up in but it is indeed one of his absolute final roles. It should also tell you something about the quality of this movie, that apparently this movie had been shelved somewhere for years, before it finally got some form of distribution.

It's probably also somewhat due to this movie being a hard sell. It's really doing its own thing and it's hard to compare it to anything else really. It sounds like a positive thing maybe but in this particular case it wouldn't had hurt the movie if it was being a bit more standard and formulaic with both its approach and main story.

It still is apparent this movie got made with all of the right intentions but it's an obvious and simple fact that none of it ever really works out very well.

The Hills Have Eyes (2006) Directed by Alexandre Aja

(Review originally written at 8 September 2008)

I'm not against remakes in general, since sometimes modern movies can give 'older' movies something extra with a makeover with todays technology and standards. Doesn't mean that I just agree with all remakes, since some of them are just plain pointless since the original ones are already brilliant at their own right.

However this is just a remake that I don't mind. To be honest I haven't seen the 1977 Wes Craven original but I'll bet that it was quite different from this movie. This movie is a typical modern horror movie, with a modern atmosphere and style written all over it. I wouldn't at all be surprised if this movie actually turned out to be better than its original.

The movie features purely unknown actors, with the exception of Ted Levine perhaps and Kathleen Quinlan also has had her 15 minutes of fame. The fact that this movie purely mostly features unknown actors in it ensures that you just never know in advance who is going to die next. This of course has a successful effect on the tension and therefor the movie overall.

Yes, "The Hills Have Eyes" is mostly a formulaic genre movie and also story-wise this movie really ain't anything special (basicly the movie is about the one killing after the other) but its simply such a fine made one that you tend to sort of forgive the movie for all of its imperfections.

For the genre movie lover this is just one great to watch movie, that features all of the ingredients you would expect from it. Some good scare moments, some fine make-up effects and plenty of good old gore. It's a quality made movie, with a fine crew behind it. Director Alexandre Aja previously had directed the French stylish horror hit "Haute tension" and was probably the reason why he got picked to directed this movie.

There are definitely worse genre movies to watch out there, especially when it comes down to remakes.
