Definitely more artsy than a common and more straightforward movie, but is that necessarily a bad thing?
This movie definitely is a case of style over substance but when the style is good and intriguing to look at, that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. And no, the style of this movie definitely isn't anything too bad to look at. These type of movies of course often tend to get very pretentious and just plain weird at times but this movie actually does a pretty decent job with telling its story in a stylish but never too vague or distant way. Sure, it's going to loose some people with its style, but it's an absolute fact that not every movie can be for just everybody, so why should you as a film-maker be too concerned about that?
At least the movie is being appealing to the eye, but at the same time this really is all that the movie has to offer. Story-wise it doesn't have an awful lot to offer. At least nothing new, or anything that surprising and intriguing. As a thriller and horror movie it does still fall flat, due to the fact that it lacks some good mystery and engaging enough characters in it. It doesn't help that it's somewhat hard to tell what's going on in the story at points, since the movie does definitely pay more attention to how it looks than to its story and storytelling.
So please don't watch this movie expecting to got a ton of thrills and scares from it. It's a visually experience, more than anything else really. It's a pretty nice looking ride, but a very bumpy one nevertheless. There still is some gore, there still are some scares and there's no denying that this is a pretty well made movie, but it just isn't ever being the most effective one as well. You won't feel any better or worse after watching this movie, so what do you gain from it and take out of it? Not much unfortunately, but good news is that you won't loose much neither.
Really not a movie for everyone, but that's OK.
