The Monkey's Paw (2013) Directed by Brett Simmons

Finally a horror movie again that dares to be different. Not that it makes this movie a great one but it's one that's definitely worth watching.

I was expecting yet another typical modern horror flick, that featured all of the familiar genre elements and characters in it. But this movie may be a newer, it actually, in a lot of ways, feels like a more old fashioned one. In some ways it feels more like a "The Twilight Zone" episode than anything else really., which is of course a real positive thing to say.

And that's all really due to its story. It features a very well known story, that you probably have heard of already, even if you don't realize it. There are many variations of the story, most commonly used in horror. Even so, this movie still manages to feel fresh and original with its story. But at the same time, it's also the story thats keeping things simple and 'small' at all times. There isn't always enough variety in the story and at times it also is lacking true suspense. This really isn't the most tense or shocking movie that you'll ever see. If you're looking for gore and plenty of killings, you'll need to look somewhere else, since this really isn't that sort of horror movie, even though there still are some killings and gore in this.


It nevertheless still features a very typical and good horror atmosphere. It's a well directed movie, that's a good looking one and often manages to build up effectively toward things. The pay off isn't always that great though, which is also due to the fact that the movie hardly ever elaborates on things. Things just happen and you shouldn't ever wonder or ask why, since you won't be getting any real answers from this movie.

But despite all of this; I had a good time watching this movie. I admit that this probably also was because of how different this movie is from most other modern genre flicks but I genuinely do believe that most people should be able to appreciate and enjoy this movie for what it is. There is nothing bad about it but yes, at the same time, there also isn't anything truly great about it either.

It's worth giving a shot!
