Lisa e il diavolo (1974) Directed by Mario Bava

First of all, it's important to mention this is a review for the original version of the movie. Apparently there also is a version for the American market of this movie, in which certain graphic scenes were cut out and some scenes were actually even added, after re-shoots. It also completely changes the story around and turns the movie into a "The Exorcist" ripoff. And you can blame the original movie version for a lot of things but not for being not creative or original enough.

No need to dance around it, this movie is just plain odd at times. Lots of crazy stuff happening in this movie and it definitely has a surreal vibe to it as well but in the end this all was actually something the movie benefited from and part of the reason why this feels like such a fresh and original watch.

It's not a typical Giallo movie by any means. As a matter of fact, I am somewhat reluctant to even call this a Giallo. It's maybe only one with its visuals and directing approach but other than that, it's being something completely different with its story. You perhaps could better call the movie a supernatural thriller, with some horror tendencies to it. The movie actually keeps throwing you off, by going into multiple direction at times with both its style and story. The one moment it feels like there is actually something supernatural happening, the other it's more apparent an actual person is behind all of it. I won't say what the movie actually is but it keeps fooling you, which might work annoying to some people, while others might enjoy this movie for that. The movie never is just one thing!

But what really still made this movie mostly work out well for me were its visuals. If you strip everything away from this movie and only its story is left, this would had most likely been one uninteresting and messy movie to watch. But the visuals and camera-work in general help to provide the movie with plenty of original and interesting cinematic moments.

What I also like about the movie is that it doesn't ever really gets into your face with its gore or violence. That's not what this movie is all about and it more forces you to pay attention to its story, rather than simply look forward to yet another graphic killing, as some other genre movies from around the same era tend to do.

It's really a movie filled with misfits, which again, also definitely adds to the movie being an interesting one. You just don't know what to expect from anyone in this movie, since most of them obviously have some sort of disturbing issues up there.

The movie also has some great casting in that regard. Telly Savalas is obviously in his element as the quirky and at the same time also scary servant and all of the Italian actors have a perfect look to them, which seemed really suitable for the type of role they were playing.

Another thing worth mentioning is the musical score by Carlo Savina, which also was perfectly suitable for the movie its style and atmosphere and next to that also was great to listen to.

Now, I do realize this is not a movie that will appeal to just everyone but if you into Italian horror, from the '70's and want to see something more unique and original for a change, this is a perfectly good movie to watch! Nothing too brilliant, I admit to that but still definitely good and interesting enough.

Ercole e la regina di Lidia (1959) Directed by Pietro Francisci

(Review originally written at 25 September 2009)

This movie definitely is not the best or most exciting one around. Strangely enough it doesn't decide on picking a more adventurous story and restrains itself mostly to the same locations.

You can say that these early Italian genre movies set the later standards for the swords & sandals genre. The first movie "Le fatiche di Ercole" began with this and this movie further expands it, without adding too much excitement or fun though. The movie has the looks and right characters involved but yet the movie only at times manages to become an interesting and good one to watch. Most of the time too little is happening, which is a shame and a waste.

The set and colors of it all might seem fake and silly looking by todays standards but this at the same time has become part of the charm of these early type of genre movies. Also for it's time this movie must have been pretty good and impressive looking at times. It's at least not as cheap looking as many other later Italian genre attempts. The earliest Hercules, or Ercole, movies are still definitely the better ones to watch.

Steve Reeves certainly was an impressive presence and for some reason he's far better than most other actors who ever portrayed the Ercole (Hercules) character in these type of movies, without having too impressive acting talents.

It's really too bad that the movie its middle part is so poor. The movie begins quite well and promising and also ends well, when the movie turns into a more spectacular one to watch.

Le fatiche di Ercole (1958) Directed by Pietro Francisci

(Review originally written at 13 December 2007)

Basically this a movie about Hercules falling into the one adventure after the other, without some times feeling an obvious connection between those events. It makes this a pretty disjointed movie to watch at times. If this movie was being made this present day in exactly the same way it would be an absolutely terrible movie but the fact that this was made in 1958 makes it a good and defining one for its genre.

It's sometimes laughable how fake this movie is looking, for instance when Hercules is fighting a lion and later a buffalo, who are both obvious puppets in the close-up scenes with Steve Reeves. You can call it part of the charm of these old type of adventure movies but it still looks ridicules, regardless.

But besides that all it's a rather good looking movie, with its sets costumes and of course settings. It's an Italian movie, so it features lots of beautiful landscapes.

The story is simple and perhaps not as action filled or fast paced as it could had been but it still is an adventurous one. The swashbuckling and adventure genre had pretty much died already when it was 1958. This is a movie that obviously tries to revive a genre, with some new more 'modern' changes and elements in it. After this 'historic' and mythological movies such as "Jason and the Argonauts". "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad and "Spartacus" were made. It's hard to say if this movie influenced any of those movies but fact is that this movie was a popular one at its time, also in America. Therefor it's a really thinkable that this movie played at least some part in redefining the genre.

Not great, most especially not by todays standards but considering the time it was made, a good genre movie that is adventurous and therefor also has entertainment value in it.
