Paranoia (2013) Directed by Robert Luketic

Quite frankly I don't really see how this movie is any worse or more ridicules than the average genre attempt. In that regard, I also really can't say that this movie is any better or worse than the average genre movie.

Of course there are plenty of problems with this movie, mainly in the story department. Yet, it doesn't make this movie a totally horrible one to watch as well. I never felt bored and I never felt angered or annoyed by anything. I therefore also still do see it as a watchable enough movie, though at the same time it isn't anything that's worth recommending to anyone either.

One of the bad things about this movie is that it's one of those technology thrillers, in which all of the technology that gets used is something utterly ridicules and unconvincing. Besides, it's set in a world in which the two fictional companies, headed by the Gary Oldman and Harrison Ford character, are leading the market, yet all of the characters are blatantly using Apple products throughout the entire movie. What was up with that?

Also a problem with the story is that neither the Gary Oldman or Harrison Ford character are 'good guys'. So when the Liam Hemsworth has to spy on the one company, for the other company, you just don't know how to feel about it. Do you want him to succeed? Do you want him to fail? Ultimalty it doesn't matter since there don't seem to be any differences between the Gary Oldman or Harrison Ford characters, or what their companies are doing and standing for. So why should you care about anything that's happening in this movie?

Besides, also partly because of this, the movie never becomes a very engaging or tense one to watch. You just don't ever have the feeling that the Liam Hemsworth's character gets stuck in a situation he can't get out of, or that his life and career ever gets in any real danger. His character's motivations are all a bit shaky and at times even non-existent. He just does stuff but you don't really ever get to understand why he's doing them.

It are all signs of a just too simplistic and not very carefully thought through movie. The movie had plenty of opportunities to make a statement against something such as greed and the big corporations or to become a more 'inteligent' one with any of its themes but it feels like this movie got written and made in too much of a hurry. It eventually all resulted in a pretty shallow, simplistic and forgettable little movie, that doesn't offer enough excitement or any real surprises in it.

But still, I just have to admit that this movie never gave me the feeling I was watching an absolutely terrible one. It's still looking and feeling like a good enough movie, which is mostly due to the performances by its cast members. It's also never becoming a boring or repetitive movie to watch, so I'm really not complaining all too much about it.

Not a complete time waster but obviously nothing too impressive or worth recommending either.

Empire State (2013) Directed by Dito Montiel

This movie is more predictable than a bad B-movie and therefore also quite a bad and boring one.

It's amazing really; all of the right ingredients for a good movie were here. A good and interesting sounding concept, a decent cast and the fact that it's based on a true story. Nothing about this movie would indicate to you that it's a bad one, until you start watching it.

Pretty much from the first minute on already it started to annoy me. There are very little things more annoying than watching a bunch of guys act like tough guys, while they obviously aren't. Something so incredibly fake and annoying about it. I don't know, perhaps I have seen a few too many movies like this already. It basically makes it hard to ever care for any of the characters, when they are constantly acting like a bunch of tough-talking buffoons. And it's not like any of the main characters are doing 'good' things. They really are all a bunch of criminals, no matter how you look at it and some of them also do some absolutely despicable things.

But really, that's hardly the only problem of this movie. The weird thing about the movie is that about halfway through, things start to shift and it starts to become about something completely different, once it decides to change its main focus. Suddenly the Liam Hemsworth character isn't the main one anymore and all of the sudden it decides to focus on the good cop that's after him, played by Dwayne Johnson. It's a weird shift really. What was it trying to do and achieve with it? Who were we supposed to root for, toward the end? It doesn't help much that the Dwayne Johnson character isn't a very well developed one. He just shows up but we don't know anything about him at all, purely because the movie doesn't give you any background information on him, or tells you his character's motivation.

There also isn't any real excitement in this movie, which is disappointing for a movie that loves to present itself as an action heist movie. It's not as if this movie is ever trying to be a serious or dramatically deep one. It clearly was going for a more fast and entertaining type of approach but there just isn't ever enough action or fun. The movie actually gets quite boring to watch after a while, which also is really due to the fact of this movie being an incredibly formulaic and predictable one. Seriously, nothing happens as a surprise in this movie and you can see all of its 'twists' and events coming from miles away already, which is all really due to the movie its own storytelling.

Now, really this isn't the worst movie you could ever watch but at the same time, why should you watch it in the first place? There is absolutely no reason for it in my opinion! There obviously are countless, far better, genre movies out there, you can have a whole lot of more fun with as well.

The Expendables 2 (2012) Directed by Simon West

It definitely seemed a good move by Stallone to pass the torch on to Simon West and let him sit on the director's chair this time. Seemed that with the first "The Expendables" movie Stallone had a hard time balancing things out. The result was a pretty disappointing movie, in which not even the action come across as anything all that great or exciting. This definitely improved with this movie and while it's being far from a great one, it's being a pretty decent and entertaining genre flick!

Please don't ask me what this movie was all about, since I simply absolutely had no idea. But in all fairness, this often had been the case with big overblown action movies and it really doesn't make them any less spectacular or entertaining to watch. It's simply being a movie to have a good and fun time with and not to take too seriously.

And luckily the film-makers and actors took things not that serious either. It's the main reason why this movie works out much better and is simply being more fun than its predecessor. The movie and its jokes are more self aware this time around and they didn't just attempted to create a big action flick but also one that delivers on a more entertaining level.

So there is more fun, the action is better but those are not the only things this sequel improved on. Thing I also really liked about this movie was that it focused more on the team aspect. Everybody gets their moment to shine in this and basically every cast member gets to show off their action skills. Yes, even Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis get to do some serious action related stuff this time around. And it really is awesome seeing them fight literally alongside, along with Sylvester Stallone as well. It helps to make the final 30 minutes basically a fan boys dream and it also are the movie its final 30 minutes that are being the movie its best minutes, which sort of makes you wonder why the rest of the movie, as well as its predecessor, weren't being more like this as well.

And the movie brings in even more big action movie stars from the past this time. Jean-Claude Van Damme is being a pretty good villain, though he shows up in the movie pretty late and also gets to do far too little. Oh well, at least he was being good and enjoyable when he did appear on screen and is still in pretty good form as well, even though he is well in his 50's already. And I admit, it was also awesome to see Chuck Norris in this. Yes, his character is quite pointless and just an excuse to have Norris pop up in this movie but he perhaps was being the most fun character out of the entire movie and I actually do hope they bring him back and make him a part of the team for the next sequel. It's sort of funny how I know basically everything about this guy and his movies but this probably was being the first movie, in which he stars, that I had ever seen. Perhaps it should be time to pick up some of his earlier movies and have a blast with them as well.

Of course there are plenty of flaws in this movie, mostly story related but I'm simply happy about it that this movie at least learned from some of the mistakes it made with the previous movie and this one is simply being a good and enjoyable genre movie to watch. Still not as great and awesome as it by all rights should be but they are more on the right track with this one and lets all hope "The Expendables 3" is going to be the ultimate Expendables movie, that everybody is hoping and longing for, ever since the first movie got announced.
