(Review originally written at 6 July 2005)

As long as you take the movie for what it is, you might find this movie quite entertaining and watchable. This movie is no different from many other B science-fiction movies out there but the movie has one big plus; The fantastic special effects. Believe it or not but the effects are on pair with those in the original "Starship Troopers". But with special-effects master Phil Tippett at the helm of making this movie, it's no big surprise really.

In a way "Starship Troopers" was also a B-movie (cheesy dialog, laughable actors, a silly story etc.) but difference with this movie is, is that "Starship Troopers" is a brilliant B-movie, kind of like Paul Verhoeven's other science-fiction masterpiece "RoboCop" that also in fact is one big fat B-movie. Yes, Verhoeven's touch is most certainly missing in this sequel. His eye for satire and gore are the things that I was missing the most.

This movie and "Starship Troopers" have in fact very little in common. "Starship Troopers" was a satire, this movie is just a mere piece of science-fiction action. "Starship Troopers" had a point, this movie hasn't, it's just a movie that was quickly made to cash in some money.

The movie actually started of quite good and it was quite entertaining but suddenly at about halve way through the movie, the movie takes a turn and suddenly turns into some kind of Zombie's in space movie. Even Gollum shows up (no not really...just his evil space twin brother). It ruined a lot for me. The gore and violence in this movie are also typical horror like, not that is a bad thing of course, some of the scene's are actually quite good (ever seen a chopped-off head in a microwave?) but it's just that the style of gore and violence is so different from the original "Starship Troopers".

Still the movie surely ain't as bad as people make you believe it is. Yes, of course when you compare it to the original "Starship Troopers" this movie turns pale in comparison. But as long as you can accept that this is a low budget B-science-fiction movie, you might enjoy this movie. I've seen quite some B-movie's in my life and I can assure you that this movie is better than 90% of them.

5/10
